  • Film. Not politics.

Was very excited for this podcast. Unfortunately the crazy swerve into how “truth social is a funny way to lie” was it for me. I’m not even a republican. It’s a toxic us vs them landscape and I won’t have any part of it.

  • Always Inneresting

I love these guys. They are enormously generous, critical of entities that harm or manipulate writers, and marry experience with theory. It does take time to find its rhythm and I really had to let Craig grow on me (mostly by just disagreeing with his articulation, not his feelings) but once that happened, the podcast became an easy daily fixture on my evening walks. The Dennis Palumbo and Aline Brosh McKenna episodes are particularly great and replay-able and I’m excited to buy the book when it... more

  • My favorite podcast

I’ve sampled a ton of podcasts over the last decade. I listen to only a few regularly. Though I am a writer, I’ve never pursued screen or scriptwriting - and don’t intend to. With that said, I love the “inside entertainment writing” that Craig and John give us weekly, the guests, the content, almost everything about it. The writing tips here are good for everyone. IMO, this is the best of them all.

  • More mailbag, please!

Love this podcast, never miss it. I sometimes wish the hosts would consider that some of their listeners might be more centrist in their political views and leave politics out of the show, but I typically just fast forward through the (Craig) tirades. It's their show, after all. But more mailbag, please!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

706 - Is TV Better Now?
Q: Does turning a screenplay into an audio drama have the same merit as making a low budget feature?
It doesn't have the same prestige as a film, but if you want to do it and make it high quality, you should definitely go for it.
706 - Is TV Better Now?
Q: How do you rate for these tasks? Have you done this before on your commission works and do you charge with a day rate?
It's labor. You're there not as a friend, but you're there to be doing work, to be helping out.
705 - Short Films and Existential Threats
Q: What are the risks surrounding the creation of concept trailers for screenwriters?
Concept trailers can help generate interest, but it's critical to avoid creating unnecessary auxiliary demands on a writer's time and resources, and generally speaking, a great script should stand on its own.
705 - Short Films and Existential Threats
Q: How can one validate the existence of their short film apart from festival success?
The focus should be on making the best film possible, as a good short can lead to opportunities regardless of festival outcomes.
705 - Short Films and Existential Threats
Q: What is the platonic ideal of the short film and how should one structure it?
Short films should focus on a single premise, utilizing a setup, development, and payoff structure that is tightly compressed, with no subplots and a strong visual storytelling element.
