  • Film. Not politics.

Was very excited for this podcast. Unfortunately the crazy swerve into how “truth social is a funny way to lie” was it for me. I’m not even a republican. It’s a toxic us vs them landscape and I won’t have any part of it.

  • Always Inneresting

I love these guys. They are enormously generous, critical of entities that harm or manipulate writers, and marry experience with theory. It does take time to find its rhythm and I really had to let Craig grow on me (mostly by just disagreeing with his articulation, not his feelings) but once that happened, the podcast became an easy daily fixture on my evening walks. The Dennis Palumbo and Aline Brosh McKenna episodes are particularly great and replay-able and I’m excited to buy the book when it... more

  • My favorite podcast

I’ve sampled a ton of podcasts over the last decade. I listen to only a few regularly. Though I am a writer, I’ve never pursued screen or scriptwriting - and don’t intend to. With that said, I love the “inside entertainment writing” that Craig and John give us weekly, the guests, the content, almost everything about it. The writing tips here are good for everyone. IMO, this is the best of them all.

Use their on-stage name in parentheses after their real name if it's important to distinguish their character.
711 - The State of Pitching
Q: What content is necessary in a pitch deck?
It should include the story, comps, character descriptions, and the series overview to effectively convey the concept.
707 - After the Hunt
Q: How to build tension in a screenplay?
Tension comes from feeling that something is about to happen, while not knowing when it will occur, making the audience sit on the edge of their seats.
707 - After the Hunt
Q: When is it appropriate to dramatize a scene versus having a character merely telling a story to other characters?
It's about instinctively knowing whether the audience can sit through a character's dialogue without it feeling stagnant.
706 - Is TV Better Now?
Q: Does turning a screenplay into an audio drama have the same merit as making a low budget feature?
It doesn't have the same prestige as a film, but if you want to do it and make it high quality, you should definitely go for it.
