  • Matt is funny and pathetic

He loves kissing up to purely, notoriously sinister figures like Adam Fogelson when they have a hit. Evil fears evil!

  • Content is good

I’m a pop culture lover but know nothing much about the business of Hollywood so I find the content of this podcast engaging. I rarely skip an episode. However, as mentioned in other reviews the demeanour of the host Matt Belloni is oftentimes off-putting. He’s can be loud, mocking, and condescending even towards his fav guests. When debating a point he has a whinny sneering tone. Sometimes he mentions he’s excluded from events etc because he’s speaks truth to power. My impression is he’s probab... more

  • Host is a mess

He’s a total blowhard with a super annoying voice. He just yells the entire time, cuts everyone off, and is under the impression he’s the smartest person on this show, which is not the case. Why do people like this have shows with guests? It’s baffling.

  • I listen to this to hear "the other side" from someone who thinks the height of cinema is anything that stars Tom Cruise and who will always support the suits over the creatives. Insightful into that kind of pysche, and a depressing reminder that these are the public perceptions the people who actually make the movies (not just distribute because they own all the resources) are dealing with.

  • The Highlander

There can only be one. This is it. Everyone else is everyone else and can kick rocks. Matt is the best investigator in hollywood whether you like his brand or not. I do personally but also try to find him on the wrong side of anything ever. That’s pretty rare.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Right and Wrong Lessons From ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’
Q: Should Hollywood lean into youth culture and bring in younger leadership?
Yes, younger leadership and fresher perspectives can help studios stay connected with new audiences, though it needs to be paired with experienced guidance to manage risk.
The Right and Wrong Lessons From ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’
Q: What is the number one right lesson from the Backrooms/Obsession phenomenon?
The changing nature of intellectual property; studios are increasingly valuing IP that originates from non-traditional sources, and this shifts how projects are selected and developed.
Is This Hollywood’s First Practical Solution to Control AI?
Q: Okay, we have a lot of questions. What would you do with Cate Blanchett's 30, 40-year body of work here?
RSL Media would verify who Cate is and then set terms for how her likeness and voice can be used, allowing her or her representatives to opt in or out with specific compensation and conditions, effectively giving her control over future use.
The Gen Z Box Office Boom and What They Think of Spielberg, Marvel, and Star Wars
Q: What did Kevin find in the Gen Z focus group about movie stars and legacy franchises?
He highlighted skepticism toward legacy franchises but interest in new, authentic storytelling and emerging properties, suggesting that understanding audience size and authentic engagement are key to profitability.
The ‘Obsession’ Windfall and How Indie Hits Pay Out
Q: Can you explain briefly how the waterfall of revenue works on an indie movie?
There are two waterfalls: the distributor's waterfall—where the distributor takes a distribution fee and recoups their costs from gross receipts—and the producer's or licensor waterfall, where after all deductions (fees, marketing, and upfront investments) the remaining net profits are split, with producers, investors, and talent receiving back-end points. The exact splits vary by deal but often include bonuses and deferrals and depend on the box office milestones that affect license fees for streaming and TV windows.
