  • Ok, but…

…the sound quality and engineering makes it very hard to listen to it. Hard to believe that a high quality magazine allows such a low quality podcast, at least soundwise.

  • Fun & Informative

I <3 Orla & I <3 Stuart. The “Longreads,” are sometimes just more than a bit pretentious.... A long lasting remnant of the deeply imbedded British attitude of the superior colonist. Deracinate!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Velo Vino, Episode 4: Bernard Hinault (Côtes de Bourg 1983) – The Badger’s farewell
Q: What makes the 1983 Côtes de Bourg bottle significant beyond its vintage?
It commemorates Bernard Hinault's career, is tied to his farewell party, and carries a complex provenance involving its brochure, advertisements, and a notable lack of a traditional label, which all add to its mythos.
Epic rides: Antonia Niedermaier on Bavaria, big wins and ski mountaineering
Q: Can you describe your Ardèche breakaway and what it felt like to win that stage race?
During Ardèche I attacked when the race slowed, believed I might be caught, and was surprised to find I had a gap; finishing the descent with a solo TT-like segment, I felt an incredible mix of relief and disbelief at winning my first big stage race.
Epic rides: Antonia Niedermaier on Bavaria, big wins and ski mountaineering
Q: What is your most epic ride, in your mind, and why?
My most epic ride is the World Championships in Zurich, because I felt exceptional physically and mentally, achieved strong performance in the elite time trial, and the overall day represented perfect alignment of effort, numbers, and satisfaction.
Velo Vino, Episode 1: René Vietto (Côtes de Ventoux 1988) – A toe in the door
Q: What makes the Côtes de Ventoux region notable in this context?
It's highlighted as a historic Rhône region with varietals like Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, offering a distinct, approachable profile that can age gracefully under proper storage, which is exactly what the episode experiments with.
Velo Vino, Episode 1: René Vietto (Côtes de Ventoux 1988) – A toe in the door
Q: What are the dangers of opening bottles like these from 37 years ago?
Chris explains that wines not designed for long aging can be fragile, susceptible to cork degradation, and may have developed complex, sometimes off-putting flavors; yet with careful handling and minimal oxygen exposure, some still offer surprising drinkability.
