  • Nostalgia to the MAX

Wonderful pod, I’ve shared it with pretty much all my childhood friends and it’s brought back so many fond memories.

As a man in his 40’s that is still playing a save from FM19 which was stated during the pandemic, this is the first time I’ve been tempted to ditch it in favour of a new save and going back to the old Champ Man.

Thankyou so much for a great podcast.

  • 20’s across the board

Let’s be frank, this show is exactly why podcasts exist. A subject so spectacularly niche that it simply couldn’t be commissioned elsewhere, but for those of us who understand the sweet addiction of CM97/98 this is essential listening.

…and I’m still hooked on the game!

Really enjoying this podcast. Proper nostalgia for all those that lost far too many evenings and weekends to the CM97/98 game. The chat is funny, nostalgic and dangerously good at making you think you still have time for ‘one more game’. It’s got me reminiscing about playing Bakayoko in a 10 position, with Tommy Svindel Larsen bossing the midfield behind him!

Josh Widdicombe: "I gave myself 20 for EVERYTHING"
Q: Can you share a memorable moment where the game felt like more than a game?
Josh recalls the moment of editing the entire squad to 20, creating a personal fantasy team, and the surreal idea of characters like Claudia Schiffer reacting to his in-game choices, which captures the emotional resonance of Champ Man for him.
Josh Widdicombe: "I gave myself 20 for EVERYTHING"
Q: What's your tactic approach in the game, and how do you balance realism with fun?
Josh emphasizes a lean, defensively solid setup with a focus on a strong central backbone and a flexible front line, highlighting how the thrill comes from shaping a story and 'feeling' the squad rather than obsessing over every stat.
Josh Widdicombe: "I gave myself 20 for EVERYTHING"
Q: Josh, why did you decide to pick Leighton Orient as the team for this first season?
Josh explains that Leighton Orient felt like a logical, local starting point given the proximity and his own ties to London-area teams, while also allowing a narrative arc of growth from Division III. It also sets up a manageable challenge for week-by-week storytelling with room for fan input.
