It’s a very important and interesting topic of how spirituality and wellness are very often commodified. And the manipulation of people by those at the top.
My issue, however, is the host. She doesn’t ask the right questions or get to the heart of the issue. She seems out of touch. She comments that it can be empowering for women to ask for money as they give so much. Knowing the paternalism of women’s history, this comment makes no sense. The host really ruins this podcast out of the gate. She constantly inserts herself into the narrative in ways that are disruptive while adding nothing.
This one of those docs you dislike everyone involved. The cult leaders are opportunistic narcissists and the followers are deeply cognitively impaired dullards. And then, of course, the host is incredibly annoying.
Fascinating story. Hope I can find it covered elsewhere. This was a total top level nothing burger.
This seems like a silly point to bring up but I feel like the music really undermines the messaging that anyone can join a cult, especially when it is masked in an accessible guise like wellness. Like silly synths and guitar that sound like they’re from an 80s vhs tape reinforces the weird, spooky vibe that people associate with cults. Also it just sounded bad! Otherwise the podcast is interesting & well approached.
