Sam Mullins, you are a national treasure! I wasn’t super stoked about the content of Season 37 but the research was obvious, the characters perfection, and the writing and narrating f’ing hilarious. I’d listen to whatever you and your team put out, even if it was a podcast about socks 👏🏻
Great story made unlistenable by Sam Mullins’ obvious, awkward desire to be a stand-up comic or funny, kooky talk show host. Why add that idiotic element to good journalism?
Evidence and rigour effects us all. We should all fear apathy and shortcuts in our legal system. This poscast is not just about technology and its misuse, but the appalling lack of due process, concern, and rule of law by so many prosecutors and judges going on right now.
It scares me that they don't care whether someone is guilty, that an innocent person goes to jail on the word of a proven liar, even when presented with theindictable cold hard facts of the deceit.
Thanks for bringing this di... more
Excellent reporting about a ridiculous cult moving into a tiny town and how the townspeople reacted (badly). First prize for entitled evil and petty maliciousness goes to Melinda in Episode 3.
FYI re: Episode 9:
the word for evidence which tends to show a person is innocent is “exculpatory” not “exonerating”. This is an important distinction, especially when the evidence in question (a CyperCheck report) is… less than incontrovertible. In the US legal system, exculpatory evidence — regardless of its strength or veracity — must be given to the defense. (It is not true in every jurisdiction that the prosecutor must discover *all* evidence they have to the defense.)

The show centers on high-stakes investigations into how new technologies, forensics, and sensational cultural events intersect with justice, power, and public perception. Episodes closely examine the use and misrepresentation of AI and data-driven tools in legal cases, the ethics of investigative storytelling, and the human consequences of controversial movements and leadership figures. Across seasons, the storytelling pairs prosecutors, defense attorneys, journalists, and researchers with firsthand reporting from courtrooms, town halls, and on-the-ground investigations, creating a cinematic narrative about accountability, transparency, and the limits of evidence in modern society. A standout thread is the tension between technological prom... more
