  • FINALLY My Leagues is Being Covered!

Been a long time listener, and fan, of Protagonist and all the different shows from the Protagonist Weekly, USL2, Knights, even listened to the TV Show/Movie reviews through the pandemic!

But now with One League Under the C (amazing title obviously) one of my favorite podcasts is covering the local team/league we follow! Match made in heaven! Thanks guys!

  • Level headed, no homer-ism talk on lower league soccer

It’s easy to start a podcast about something you’re passionate about. However it’s difficult to make that topic interesting or come off as neutral, especially when you want the topic at hand to succeed. The guys at Protagonist do care about lower league soccer in the United States but are able to call out the good from the bad. Their interviews are well researched and the guests are almost always going to leave expelling far more than any listener could have imagined. A great listen.

  • Lower league level soccer, premier league level banter

I don’t give a rip about nisa and actually think the league should lose its ussf sanctioning due to its numerous blunders and terrible leadership. These guys however, have such good chemistry and passion for the league and lower league soccer in general, that I will tune into each and every episode and have a heck of a good time doing it. Keep up the great work guys. Also love the USL 2 coverage and that is what I am most looking forward to listening to this upcoming season. Cheers!

  • Love the Show!

I look forward to Knights Who Say NISA every time it comes out! I think you add so much to the league and bring legitimacy and excitement to those of us that follow the league. Long live Dan, Dan, and John Howard-Fusco! We are the knights who say Ni!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Root and Brand: S2E2 - Talking APSL with Hoboken FC 1912's Bill Marth
Q: Why did APSL pursue a partnership with Michigan Premier Soccer League and other regional leagues rather than creating an entirely new nationwide umbrella?
The goal is to build credible, sustainable growth by leveraging existing regional ecosystems, aligning schedules where feasible, and focusing on long-term viability rather than forcing rapid, disruptive expansion.
Root and Brand: S2E2 - Talking APSL with Hoboken FC 1912's Bill Marth
Q: What changes would you like US Soccer or USASA to make in the near term to help amateur soccer grow?
Bill envisions more downward redistribution of money from elite programs to amateurs, better youth-adult club integration, and a fall-spring system nationwide with stronger regional affinities and sustainable league structures.
Root and Brand: S2E2 - Talking APSL with Hoboken FC 1912's Bill Marth
Q: So Bill, obviously, you've written a book—describe what the Athletes' Council is and why amateur soccer involvement matters.
The Athletes' Council is mandated by law to give athletes a voice in governance; Bill argues amateur athletes should be defined by participation in amateur teams, not necessarily elite status, and that broader athlete representation is essential for inclusive governance.
Root and Branch: S2E1 - Season 2 Launch with Sonny Dalesandro
Q: What's the elevator pitch of the Tulsa Athletic story?
The Cliffs Notes would be: don't be deterred by obstacles when bringing the beautiful game to your community; Tulsa Athletic built a sustainable, community-focused club that can thrive despite market size and competition by staying true to its identity and prioritizing accessibility and community impact.
The W Show - Talkin' Snohomish United
Q: How important is branding in recruitment, especially for players aged 17 to 23?
Branding matters as players want to be drawn to programs that look well run and have strong marketing; beyond gear, they want to be part of a quality team, which is why clubs that market effectively can gain better recruitment traction.
