  • Mediocre

The Athletics podcast content is their great strength which makes this dross really surprising. This simplistic, dull and bland chit chat is suitable for children and people just getting into football. Nothing original or insightful here

  • Some good, some bad.

The Athletic Podcast is generally pretty good. David Ornstein is always insight from the transfer front and there are some great contributors.

The negatives. Some of the contributors like Sam Lee and Mark Critchley are truly dreadful and often little of interest. It’s often a roll of a dice on them. It’s also very Sky 6 focused.

  • Better than Guardian, it not much

Basic reporting in high level insights are fine. Ornstein and a few others quite good.

However the main crew are so hypocritical, inconsistent; their bias comes out.

Unfortunately The Athletic succumbs to social pressure to have diverse voices based on immutable characteristics than on merit. Why else have that thick woman giving commentary?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is Infantino's exit now inevitable?
Q: Laura, when did you first hear about the plans and what was your immediate reaction?
We heard about the FFE proposal at the same time as everyone else, with no prior consultation, which underscored a governance breakdown and spurred us to mobilize quickly against what we saw as a catastrophic move.
Spain conquer the world + Ornstein's summer transfers
Q: Are there specific clubs looking to sign players from this World Cup, and who could be targets for top clubs?
Clubs across the Premier League, La Liga, and elsewhere are monitoring talent from the tournament, with continued emphasis on midfielders and forward options such as Alvarez and potential wingers; Arsenal and Manchester United are mentioned as potential suitors for central roles and forward options, as teams plan disruptive moves to push to a higher level.
Spain conquer the world + Ornstein's summer transfers
Q: Which handful of players from the World Cup will be getting the biggest transfer boost?
David Ornstein identifies several names showing strong transfer momentum post-World Cup, including young midfielders and attackers who performed well; senior players like Rodri may see renewed interest, while others such as Manu Kone and Gilmoura are highlighted as beneficiaries of strong performances and availability.
Spain stun France + can England overcome Argentina?
Q: Can England detach from the weight of history and focus on the game?
The consensus among the hosts and guests is that England should treat it as a normal football match, using the occasion to fuel intensity rather than being overwhelmed by narrative, with leadership from players like Bellingham and tactical discipline from Tuchel guiding them.
How do England stop Erling Haaland?
Q: Can France be stopped in a knockout?
While knockout football means anything can happen, the panel suggests France appear the most complete team, with threats across the pitch, though tactical adjustments by opponents could still cause issues.
