  • Informative & Empowering!

As a novice artist that wants to explore so many different mediums with so little time, (yearning for retirement!!) Sam has helped me slow down and simplify my practice. I adore the 3 dilemmas format; I find them so helpful! Sending good vibes from the U.S.

  • Good honest feedback

I've been following Sam on Instagram for many years. I've taken her workshops and have been in creative coaching sessions with her for a couple of years. She never feeds you any fluff and always gives you straightforward feedback. This podcast is no different. Love it, Sam!

  • Wonderfully supportive and practical advice for artists at any stage.

I loved listening to this. Sam is an experienced artist and coach, and gives such helpful and practical advice for dilemmas that arise when you’re a maker. I like how the real life scenarios are very relatable to all artists. Sam offers a non judgemental and supportive way of reframing how we might think about our own work (eg ‘not good enough’) and brings you back to why you want to make art in the first place. We can all learn so much from Sam, and I can’t wait to hear the rest of the series.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 12: Instagram Burnout, Pricing and Creative Pressure
Q: Alan asks how to approach a residency with structure versus freedom without risking failure.
Sam suggests anchoring to the initial project proposal, breaking the residency into phases, allowing space for spontaneity within a light structure, and reframing the residency as a safe proving ground rather than a pass/fail test.
Episode 12: Instagram Burnout, Pricing and Creative Pressure
Q: Lou asks when and how to raise workshop prices without losing attendees.
Sam advises recognizing the need to raise prices due to growing experience and costs, communicating increases clearly and simply, planning the price change with a practical start date, and ensuring new pricing still serves the audience while protecting the creator's sustainability.
Episode 12: Instagram Burnout, Pricing and Creative Pressure
Q: Dana asks how to keep using Instagram without it draining energy or devaluing the work.
Sam reframes Instagram as a free platform with no guaranteed reward, encourages building a healthy relationship by defining personal goals for the platform, reducing focus on metrics like likes, and adopting simple routines that prioritize meaningful sharing over chasing engagement.
Episode 11: Accuracy, Creative Pressure and Overthinking
Q: Jill asks how to start a creative project when time and decision-making anxiety are high.
The host identifies overthinking as the core issue, advises renaming 'project' to reduce pressure, recommends choosing one medium for a short, defined period, and emphasizes that the value lies in the process and focus rather than the end product.
Episode 11: Accuracy, Creative Pressure and Overthinking
Q: Rachel asks how to handle the pressure of an upcoming gallery exhibition after leaving a demanding career.
The host suggests reframing the exhibition as a snapshot of where Rachel is now, not a polished final body of work; recommends delaying self-judgment, simplifying choices to one medium, and scheduling a small, pressure-free time block to create something for the act of making itself.
