  • Mixed bag.

Decent on defence and IR stuff; energy stuff has to be taken with a grain of salt—still a bit stuck in the past there.

  • Building in the High Arctic

Dave Perry is so good. A national treasure. This information on the High Arctic should be invaluable for future DND programs. The Canadian public needs to know the scope and challenges in order to induce private capital.

  • Great content, poor audio production

I so badly want to love this pod but the audio quality is so poor (always super low volume, have to crank it way up, the "s"s are harsh and tinny, guests are often even quieter and scratchy) that I often give up 1/3 of the way through.

  • Great discussions

One of the best podcasts for in-depth discussions about the machinery of the Canadian government, especially the military and diplomacy spheres.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ceasefire and Open Questions about Oil
Q: How long might it take for production to return to pre-crisis levels, and what factors influence that timeline?
The timeline depends on the pace of upstream recoveries in Gulf producers, the pace of LNG and oil exports through new pipelines, and how quickly refiners can restore runs; initial estimates suggest a sizable but uncertain lag, with China's demand and stock releases further shaping the trajectory.
Ceasefire and Open Questions about Oil
Q: How have oil markets reacted in the weeks since the deal was announced?
Markets showed volatility with a story of both supply constraints and shifting demand; prices and transits rallied or stalled as traders reassessed the impact of the MOU and the evolving political risk, while China's demand and stock movements helped absorb some of the shock, keeping prices from a sharper spike.
America at 250: Democracy and the Future
Q: What else would you suggest that we work with Mexico on to build that relationship?
The guidance centers on language, robust embassy presence, and mutual interests on trade and security, urging Canada to maintain a trilateral, rule-bound framework with the United States and Mexico to prevent opportunistic shifts in policy.
America at 250: Democracy and the Future
Q: So what does it mean to be American today?
Frum argues that being American today oscillates between leading progress and facing decline, with America's choices shaping global democratic norms and the need for renewed commitment to constitutional safeguards and alliance-building.
America at 250: Democracy and the Future
Q: Mr. Carney turns to you and says that there's a rupture in the system; what are you going to tell them?
The response stresses building coalitions based on shared values and clear standards, while warning against reliance on partners who disregard rules, and recommending explicit policy offers to provinces like Alberta about aligning with US positions without sacrificing national sovereignty.
