  • Mixed bag.

Decent on defence and IR stuff; energy stuff has to be taken with a grain of salt—still a bit stuck in the past there.

  • Building in the High Arctic

Dave Perry is so good. A national treasure. This information on the High Arctic should be invaluable for future DND programs. The Canadian public needs to know the scope and challenges in order to induce private capital.

  • Great content, poor audio production

I so badly want to love this pod but the audio quality is so poor (always super low volume, have to crank it way up, the "s"s are harsh and tinny, guests are often even quieter and scratchy) that I often give up 1/3 of the way through.

  • Great discussions

One of the best podcasts for in-depth discussions about the machinery of the Canadian government, especially the military and diplomacy spheres.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Marking Milestones for the NSS
Q: What are the next steps in the shipbuilding strategy for the East Coast package of work after reaching this milestone?
The plan is to wind down the AOPS work while accelerating River Class Destroyer construction, with additional growth in the workforce and continued integration with Coast Guard programs, culminating in ship naming, commissioning, and eventual transition of experience into the RCD phase.
Marking Milestones for the NSS
Q: Just talk a little about the consequence of delivering the final ship of that class.
Delivering the final AOPS ship marks the end of that phase while setting the stage for the East Coast package's next steps, including moving into River Class Destroyer work and continuing to build Navy and Coast Guard capabilities together.
Middle East Conflict and Canada’s Stake
Q: If the Prime Minister asks for concrete steps Canada could take during a potential resolution, what would you advise?
Keep an open mind about where Canada could be useful, review historical attempts in the region, increase diplomatic engagement including informal channels, consider track-two diplomacy, and ensure military capacity is ready to play a meaningful role if needed.
Middle East Conflict and Canada’s Stake
Q: What does this all mean for Canada and its relationships with allies like the United States and NATO?
Canada should prepare for greater military capacity and be ready to deploy in international efforts, while maintaining open channels and engaging with allies to influence regional stability, as domestic pressures rise to be a reliable partner.
Leadership for Canada's Energy Future
Q: What role does leadership character play in delivering infrastructure reform?
Leader character—courage, drive, vision, collaboration, and humility—shapes culture, drives accountability, and enables decision-making under pressure, which is essential to translating policy into timely, concrete actions.
