  • Mixed bag.

Decent on defence and IR stuff; energy stuff has to be taken with a grain of salt—still a bit stuck in the past there.

  • Building in the High Arctic

Dave Perry is so good. A national treasure. This information on the High Arctic should be invaluable for future DND programs. The Canadian public needs to know the scope and challenges in order to induce private capital.

  • Great content, poor audio production

I so badly want to love this pod but the audio quality is so poor (always super low volume, have to crank it way up, the "s"s are harsh and tinny, guests are often even quieter and scratchy) that I often give up 1/3 of the way through.

  • Great discussions

One of the best podcasts for in-depth discussions about the machinery of the Canadian government, especially the military and diplomacy spheres.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Leadership for Canada's Energy Future
Q: What role does leadership character play in delivering infrastructure reform?
Leader character—courage, drive, vision, collaboration, and humility—shapes culture, drives accountability, and enables decision-making under pressure, which is essential to translating policy into timely, concrete actions.
Leadership for Canada's Energy Future
Q: How does centralized consultation help or hinder project timelines?
Centralization can improve efficiency and reduce fragmentation, but it can also add bureaucratic layers and erode local autonomy, which may slow project execution if not managed with local relationships and trust in Indigenous communities.
Leadership for Canada's Energy Future
Q: What is the central problem this leadership-focused approach is trying to solve?
The main issue is a combination of a rigid regulatory regime, constitutional federalism tensions, and bureaucratic inertia that together have dampened investment in major projects; leadership is needed to sustain vision, build trust, and coordinate across federal and provincial levels.
Oil and Imperial Overreach: The British Precedent
Q: How did domestic opposition shape the oil transition in Britain, and what lessons remain relevant?
There was significant opposition from coal interests and workers, which reveals how social and economic costs can complicate rapid energy transitions; today, similar tensions around energy strategy, labor, and regional economies echo those historical debates.
Oil and Imperial Overreach: The British Precedent
Q: What makes the 1913 transition from coal to oil so consequential in world history?
The shift altered naval doctrine, economic power, and geopolitical alignments by tying Britain's security and industrial might to oil, not coal, fundamentally changing strategies and relationships—an early example of energy shaping imperial power.
