  • Really excellent podcast

I’ve been a longtime listener of many other Canadian politics podcasts, but this might be my new favourite. The production quality is high, it’s well-researched and informative, and Catherine Cullen is an excellent host and interviewer. Guests are always good and the editing is top notch. Highly recommend this!

  • What David Frum gets right

Catherine’s interview with David Frum related to Build Canada really brings to light the truth. Mr. Frum got this narrative right. The federal government is finally focusing on the need to focus on a united path that will allow us to build projects of national interest. This takes courage and discipline. I agree with Mr. Frum. Small groups should never be given a veto on the initiatives that will bring a better life to the majority of Canadians.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

150 years later, why does Canada still have the Indian Act?
Q: How would a one-parent rule work and why is it being discussed now?
The one-parent rule would allow status to pass to children regardless of the other parent's status, aligning with citizenship-style inheritance and aiming to prevent the extinction of status across generations.
150 years later, why does Canada still have the Indian Act?
Q: Janice, next week marks 150 years since the Indian Act became law. Why was it created?
At the core, it was about assimilation, control, and enfranchisement—undoing Indigenous governance and imposing a colonial regime that sought to turn Indigenous peoples into Canadians.
How the Liberals won over a floor crosser
Q: What was the moment you felt the crossing could actually happen?
The pivotal moment was a lunch where the Liberal side emphasized shared community concerns and a welcoming family atmosphere, rather than a hard sell, which helped him consider the move as a serious option.
Is the NDP ready to win?
Q: What is the core constitutional issue being debated in relation to the Not Withstanding Clause?
The Not Withstanding Clause allows legislatures to pass laws that may violate rights, with a five-year sunset; the debate centers on whether courts should weigh in on rights violations when the clause is invoked and how to balance regional autonomy with national unity.
Politicians playing chicken — will it mean another election?
Q: What are you asking for in the budget, and how realistic is it to achieve those changes by Monday?
Elizabeth May explains that while some budget changes are off the table, she is pushing for targeted climate and social measures that could gain enough support if other parties are persuaded to back them, signaling that a path to yes exists but hinges on compromise and messaging.
