Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The presidential race was just blown wide open
Q: What does Mairead McGuinness's withdrawal mean for Fine Gael's chances in the race?
It creates a scramble to nominate a new candidate, intensifies internal discussions, and could shift support toward other Fine Gael figures who may appeal to the party base and the broader electorate.
We sit down with Catherine Connolly
Q: What is your stance on redress for victims and the role of religious orders in addressing past abuses?
She says redress is a policy decision and that as president she would advocate on behalf of those affected, while acknowledging the limits of the presidency in direct negotiations with religious orders.
We sit down with Catherine Connolly
Q: How would your presidency differ from Michael D. Higgins's approach?
She emphasizes courage, inclusivity, and using her voice to represent a broad movement beyond party lines, while acknowledging continuity with Higgins's legacy but asserting an independent path forward.
We sit down with Catherine Connolly
Q: What led you to enter politics, and did you ever imagine becoming president?
Connolly explains she joined politics reluctantly after seeing others canvass, and the presidency was never in her initial plans; her ambition emerged only recently after national messages urged her to consider the role.
