  • Appalling Tommy Robinson podcast

You’re only as good as your worst podcast and the podcast on Tommy Robinson was a disgrace. No discussion of the subject’s alleged Islamophobia. No questions around his alleged drug taking. No pushback on some of his outlandish and inaccurate statistics. No mention of his time in prison. That’s just the basic stuff. It’s not journalism, it’s platforming a dangerous individual. Forget about the Irish times

I live in California and really appreciate getting a world perspective from Ireland and the UK. The news is balanced and offers news and culture from outside the U.S. bubble. Thank you.

  • Obnoxious contributor Kneecap episode

From an Irish Times subscriber, what an elitist and biased podcast contributor Hugh Linehan is on the recent Kneecap episode.

Stick to writing, his disdain for people doesn’t come across quite as strong on the newspaper page.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside the State’s latest care scandal: The at-risk children on Tusla’s ‘no beds list’
Q: What exactly are special emergency arrangements and why are they used so extensively?
Holland clarifies that special emergency arrangements are unregistered, quickly set up placements used when registered foster or care options are unavailable, but they come with concerns about safety, oversight, and long-term stability for the children involved.
Inside the State’s latest care scandal: The at-risk children on Tusla’s ‘no beds list’
Q: Could that money be used instead to directly fund Tusla?
The host asks whether funds spent on private SEA placements could instead backfill direct Tusla funding; Kitty Holland explains the broad funding dynamics, including underfunding and departmental constraints, and notes the ongoing tension between short-term emergency solutions and long-term investment.
The euthanasia case dividing Spain
Q: Why did it take so long for the decision to be sanctioned, and what was the outcome?
A lengthy legal process involving multiple courts and arguments about the patient's capacity and mental health ended with the European Court of Human Rights allowing the death to proceed, despite significant opposition from her family and campaigners.
The euthanasia case dividing Spain
Q: What happened in her life which led to that decision?
Her history of trauma, disability from a severe injury, years in care, and substantial psychological pain contributed to her request under the euthanasia law, which was considered as part of a broader hope for relief through medical assistance.
How a tech savvy woman lost €30,000 in an invoice scam
Q: Why do victims often blame themselves, and how can we change that mindset?
Victims feel foolish for missing red flags, but the show emphasizes that criminals are highly skilled and that ownership of the crime should not fall on the victim; awareness and proactive verification are the keys to prevention.
