  • Banal

What used to be a staple is now very occasional. It’s like watching a loved one with alzheimers disappear before your very eyes.

  • Excellent

David interviews very interesting guests covering various topics of interest. Short segments; he asks great questions and allows his guest to speak on their area of expertise.

  • RTE Lag Way Behind Newstalk

It’s been a few months since David McCullagh took over from Claire and it’s disappointing so far. McCullagh is a journeyman presenter like many but not good enough to present the flagship show. I have great difficulty believing that RTE are unable to find someone better. The production team are not helping with banal topics. Newstalk continues to lead.

  • Almost as bland as Claire Byrne

David needs to up his game remove his FFG hat and start taking a more balanced approach to his show. He is in grave danger of out blanding the bland previous version of this series!

  • Phillip Boucher-Hayes on “Today”

There can be no doubt that Phillip is the perfect replacement for Claire. His voice and intonation can be both serious and entertaining. Past master of the nuance and inflection. His style and quick wit brooks no bull when interviewing. He has that special quality called radio presence. Reminiscent of Pat Kenny in his glory days.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meta layoffs: what does it say about our competitiveness
Q: Can Ireland turn this disruption into opportunity for startups and employment?
Yes, through public-sector transformation, seed funding, and policies that help laid-off workers pivot into new tech opportunities, creating an ecosystem that keeps jobs in Ireland and potentially attracts new ones.
Meta layoffs: what does it say about our competitiveness
Q: What are the long-term implications for Ireland's tax take and exchequer if tech jobs decline?
There may be a shift toward higher reliance on corporate tax while payroll tax declines, but policymakers need to diversify the economy and bolster indigenous tech capabilities to mitigate revenue volatility.
Meta layoffs: what does it say about our competitiveness
Q: These job cuts are a lot worse than expected. Is this just a Meta problem or part of a broader tech bubble burst?
The discussion suggests it's not just Meta; AI is driving a fundamental shift that will redefine cost structures and employment across the tech sector, with Ireland potentially facing reduced hiring but continued pressure to attract and retain high-skilled talent.
Swatch sale scuffles - when new products create chaos
Q: Tell me about this one.
Adam explains that the collaboration blends Swatch's affordable, colorful style with Audemars Piguet's luxury cachet, creating a high-end aura around a relatively accessible product and triggering both genuine interest and speculative buying in a limited number of stores.
Kidney'versary' - 10 years since a lifesaving transplant
Q: What would you say to people about living donations and making your wishes known?
Ed urges people to have honest dinner-table conversations about donation as a normal, non-taboo topic, while John stresses reaching out for help early and registering donor wishes.
