  • Claire Was Better on RTE

I don’t listen to Claire as much as I did when she was with RTE.

Newstalk have interminable ads before during and after each podcast segment. I’m not sure I can persevere-nor want to. Also the quality of the show is disappointing and it gets worse as the weeks go by. What was a staple is now occasional if at all. At least we still have Pat Kenny which is the best weekend show on radio worldwide.

  • Professional* and empathetic broadcaster, some subjects never on the program though

Claire is a competent and personable interviewer. I’m glad that she stayed in broadcasting. She has a beautiful broadcast-quality voice which is a pleasure to listen to. A few concerns … one is that Newstalk (and RTE) still avoid airing anyone who is gender-critical, opposes the transing of children and the invasion of gender ideology into schools and society at large. Having Peadar Tóibín on infrequently is insufficient. Laoise de Brun and Fiona McAneena come to mind immediately as potential... more

  • Let Claire be Claire

Huge loss for RTE! Love hearing Claire’s voice. The Newstalk topics seem significantly lighter than the stories she was doing for RTE. Hope this is just because of the first month of transitioning to a new show. Newstalk, please let Claire take on more of the political news and events.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

People turning to drugs to get them through social events
Q: OK. And why do you think it is that people feel that they need something like cocaine and ketamine to get them through a social situation? Is this replacing alcohol?
The guest explains that it's not simply replacing alcohol but being used alongside it; there is a social normalization of recreational drug use, and some people feel cocaine use is now seen as normal, which contributes to its uptake.
Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Triple Lock
Q: What are the expected costs and logistical considerations of Ireland's EU presidency?
The costs are debated, with figures around 165-185 million euro cited, plus security costs; the presidency is framed as a chance to steer EU policy on budgets, digital safety, and maritime security, with real benefits for citizens.
Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Triple Lock
Q: How does the Occupied Territories Bill align with European and international rules?
She outlines a two-pronged approach: banning trade in goods from occupied territories unilaterally is complex, but pursuing a European-wide ban, especially on services, strengthens a united stance and reduces legal risk.
Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Triple Lock
Q: Why is the government pursuing changes to the Triple Lock now?
The minister explains that changes are driven by a need for clearer oversight and time-sensitive realities in UN missions, with emphasis on peacekeeping rather than traditional combat roles, while preserving neutrality and national sovereignty.
Influencers are briefed about new investment scheme
Q: What are the rules from your point of view before people invest?
Investors should earn the right to invest by not carrying expensive short-term debt, having an emergency buffer, and ensuring they are financially prepared for long-term savings rather than using the account for short-term needs.
