Season Three began April 28. I am renaming the podcast The Christian Past That Wasn't to be consistent with the forthcoming book from Broadleaf Books, The Christian Past That Wasn't: Debunking the Christian Nationalist Myths That Hijack History. This is so much more than a fact-checking book; it critiques the entire Christian nationalist project and misuse of history for political gain. Consistent... more

A Christian looks at the historical record to find that America was not founded as a Christian nation. And that was a good thing.
This is a fantastic resource for understanding how Christian nationalism came up and the dangers it poses today. I’ve been following right wing Christian extremism since the mid 90s so I’m familiar with many of the topics discussed. While the series begins as a deconstruction of the work of “historian” David Barton, it goes so much deeper than that and digs into the the motivations and goals of the movement and their support of Trump. Highly recommended!
I left Christianity behind years ago. But I really appreciate that there are still Christians around who believe in the separation of church and state, and still fight for unpopular truths. I am still unlearning my homeschool “history” classes from Barton. Thank you for all your efforts in this podcast, it was well-done.
This is a great podcast and covers a great and important topic. As the main face of Christian Twitter and leader of thought leaders, I’ve given this the CrowdBury Center award for being worthy of the reward.
This podcast is well researched.
Take the time to listen to this podcast and I bet you’ll agree that the biggest threat to America is Christian Nationalism.

The show critically examines Christian nationalism and its use (and misuse) of history, with a strong emphasis on church-state separation as intended by the founders. Across episodes, topics center on debunking myths propagated by prominent Christian nationalist figures, historical accuracy in public discourse, and the broader social consequences of intertwining religion and politics. The host(s) frequently guide listeners through historical context, legal principles, and civics, often featuring academics, journalists, and researchers who can illuminate the movement's origins, methods, and real-world impact. A notable strength is the rigorous, scholarly approach balanced with accessible storytelling, plus connections to contemporary policy ... more
