  • Perfect history podcast

This is one of my favorite daily podcasts. I especially love the varied lengths of each episode allowing one to choose episodes based on available time. Also, as a USAmerican it is refreshing to see the world and history from a non USA biased perspective. Also, as a subscriber, I love the lack of commercials.

  • too vague

i like dan and his clear passion and understanding of historic events but i never feel any subject gets the time it deserves, world changing events are lucky if they get an hour and most get less. maybe it’s designed specifically this way but id like to see subjects spread over a few episodes instead of being crammed into one

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Life in the Trenches
Q: Let's take the biggest question out of the way first. We talk about trench warfare, we talk about the Western Front. So from late 1914 to sort of 1916, that era, what is a trench?
A trench is digging in to defend against enemy fire, developed from earlier forms and rapidly expanded into complex networks; front-line, support, reserve lines, with extensive logistics, communications, and sanitary systems evolving to keep soldiers alive and capable for longer campaigns.
Spain vs Portugal: The Spice Race
Q: Tell me about Europe in the 15th century. Who are the big powers and who's in charge of the trade?
Europe starts as a cluster of powers isolated from much of the world by the Ottoman-controlled trade routes; dominant forces before the Atlantic opened are the Holy Roman Empire and city-states like Venice, with Portugal emerging as the leading Atlantic pioneer capable of breaking into the Indian Ocean trade and setting up a proto-imperial network.
Why Did The Roman Empire Collapse?
Q: How did the third-century crisis reshape the empire's military and administration?
Internal pressures from provincial voices seeking a share of power, the rise of a Persian threat, and the shift from large legions to frontier-based and elite units strengthened central control in the short term but set the stage for future fragmentation.
Why Did The Roman Empire Collapse?
Q: What was the core weakness in the imperial system that contributed to unraveling?
The lack of a clear succession plan and the constant need to replace emperors created political instability, which allowed barbarian coalitions to gain leverage and act independently as central authority weakened.
The Origins of the Tank
Q: Is 1940 the tanks' greatest moment of reputation, or is there another defining campaign to consider?
Mark Urban argues that while 1940 is a defining moment for armor, especially in the Blitzkrieg context, other campaigns like Kursk and later Cold War developments also stand out; the overall trajectory shows tanks achieving peak impact in certain operational contexts rather than universally deciding wars.
