  • Good Pods on WWII

Good pods with Mark Urban on tanks and Roger Moorhouse on U-boats. (I’ll look into getting Roger’s latest book!) The pod on life in the Luftwaffe was very disappointing. The author seemed very knowledgeable but was unserious about the topic.

  • Right?

    • SERIES: “Boston Tea Party”. Guest catchphrase: “… Right?” (Not only at the end of sentences, but also MID-SENTENCE!).

•Episode: Life of the Week — Susan B. Anthony: In which the host says: “Her name does loom so large,” then mispronounces that name for the entire podcast.

•EPISODE: History of Extinction in which, in the opening seconds, the host misuses the words “hone in” instead of the correct “home in”. And he’s not even American, which might otherwise explain it. (“To hone” Is to... more

  • Quality and presentation of information has declined

Noticeable decline in quality of recent guests, their inability to communicate depth of knowledge and provide interesting information is disappointing. Laughing when presenting (Luftwaffe episode) takes away from topic and makes listening unbearable. Very hit and miss - time to unsubscribe:(

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Life on the mean streets of 19th-century London
Q: In what ways were the hard streets of southeast London 'hard', and what does that tell us about daily life at the time?
Hard streets referred to dirt, overcrowding, and the lack of sanitation, but also to the social structures that kept families dependent on limited incomes. The discussion shows how people managed housing, learned to access education despite barriers, and found moments of beauty and community that helped sustain them through adversity.
Life on the mean streets of 19th-century London
Q: Whose stories are you telling in the book, and why are these two autobiographies used as the framing device?
The book is framed by two autobiographies: George Timworth's, which covers much of the first half, and Charlie Chaplin's, which bridges into the later period. They provide a lens to explore the wider experiences of the poor working class in Lambeth and South London, because both figures—though extraordinary—emerge from ordinary backgrounds and their stories illuminate a broader social history.
Culture and conflict: a historical tour of Dublin
Q: What marked the turning point for Dublin during the 17th and 18th centuries in terms of political power and religious divides?
The 1641 Rebellion and the Cromwellian conquest shifted power toward Protestant administration, followed by the 18th-century Georgian expansion and the establishment of a Dublin Parliament, which entrenched sectarian power dynamics and laid groundwork for later independence movements.
Culture and conflict: a historical tour of Dublin
Q: Could you very briefly describe the key events that shaped Dublin in the late medieval period and the Norman impact on the city?
The Normans arrived in the 12th century, built Dublin Castle, and created a political and military core around the Pale, with strong trading and urban growth, while the indigenous population and Viking remnants contributed to a blended, layered urban identity.
Elizabeth I: a woman in a man’s world
Q: What were the most pressing concerns Elizabeth faced in her first year on the throne?
She faced legitimacy questions due to her contested line of succession, gender biases in a male-dominated society, religious tensions between Protestants and Catholics, and economic and political instability that required careful consolidation of power.
