  • Good, but give the preachiness a rest

The progressive hand-wringing and self-flagellation over “Reconquista” possibly being a “problematic” term and crowbarring a very 21st Century right-on rant about mUh pAtRiArcHy and perimenopause into a discussion about witchcraft just grate.

  • Good podcast.

Mostly a great podcast. Immense range and scope. Sometimes the Wokery and the re-framing of everything this biaised lens can be most irritating though.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

True Crime: Medici Murder at the Louvre
Q: Now, one thing you've written about and are researching still, I think, is the fact that if the pamphlets before continuous assassination had been multiple, the assassination itself produces the pamphlet explosion, this huge propaganda campaign. Can you tell me about that?
Yes. It was a deliberate PR effort to control the narrative after a secret murder, producing a multilingual, multimodal propaganda campaign that justified the act and shaped public opinion across Europe.
Great Plague of London
Q: What light does the episode shed on the relationship between London and the provinces during the plague year?
Rebecca describes how other cities adopted travel passes and similar controls, illustrating a national response and the spread of fear beyond London, which altered mobility, trade, and political trust across England.
Great Plague of London
Q: How did public health measures conceptually operate in the city during the outbreak, and what does that reveal about contemporary understandings of disease?
The conversation clarifies quarantine protocols, guards at infected houses, the role of nurses, and the broader logic of bad air and humoral balance, showing that authorities pursued containment even when medical science couldn't cure the illness.
Great Plague of London
Q: What research enabled you to develop such an immersive opening for 1666, walking London through sights, sounds, and textures?
Rebecca Rideal explains that a microhistorical method—deep dives into letters, state papers, parish records, and weather accounts—allows rich, ground-level texture, while she uses a careful balance of sources to ground readers in the lived experience of 1665 London.
The Tudors Abroad
Q: Can you tell me about Rodrigo Lopes and what his downfall tells us about belonging and acceptance in Elizabethan England?
Lopes is presented as the 'good immigrant' whose fluency, usefulness, and multilingualism momentarily secure his standing, but political crisis leads to his accusation of treason, illustrating how acceptance is conditional and identity can be weaponized during times of threat.
