  • Good, but give the preachiness a rest

The progressive hand-wringing and self-flagellation over “Reconquista” possibly being a “problematic” term and crowbarring a very 21st Century right-on rant about mUh pAtRiArcHy and perimenopause into a discussion about witchcraft just grate.

  • Good podcast.

Mostly a great podcast. Immense range and scope. Sometimes the Wokery and the re-framing of everything this biaised lens can be most irritating though.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Edmund Halley & His Comet
Q: How did Halley influence Newton's Principia and what was his ultimate contribution to celestial mechanics?
Halley funded, championed, and persuaded for the publication of Newton's Principia, while also facilitating Newton's mathematical proofs and later extending the implications to predict the return of Halley's Comet, demonstrating a unified view of celestial and terrestrial physics.
Edmund Halley & His Comet
Q: Why was the longitude problem so crucial, and how did Halley engage with it?
Longitude posed a practical navigation challenge; Halley proposed the lunar distance method, supported by a Greenwich observatory plan and collaboration with Flamsteed and Wren to improve star and moon data for longitude calculations.
Edmund Halley & His Comet
Q: Before we get into Halley's major achievements, what did astronomy look like before the 16th century and what ideas was he challenging?
The discussion traces a shift from Earth-centered, circular models to Keplerian ellipses; Copernicus and Kepler expanded the picture, with Kepler proving planets move in ellipses with varying speeds, setting the stage for Halley's work.
Royal Favourites: Robert Dudley, Elizabeth I's Forbidden Love
Q: What significance did the Kenilworth celebrations have for Elizabeth and Dudley's public image and political strategy?
The pageants reframed their relationship as a powerful, almost royal alliance in the public imagination, allowing Elizabeth to project stability and cultural patronage while subtly signaling Dudley's elevated status and his role in court life without formal marriage.
Royal Favourites: Robert Dudley, Elizabeth I's Forbidden Love
Q: What role did William Cecil play in the Dudleys' rise and in the scandal surrounding Dudley's marriage rumors?
Cecil acted as a counterweight at court, opposing Dudley's closeness to the Queen and often coordinating efforts to curb Dudley's influence, while also maintaining a working relationship with him; their tension reflects broader religious and political rivalries at the time.
