  • 😍

Love this podcast, a new favourite!!! The topics are fascinating, Kate is a brilliant host and the guest speakers are well-informed. An engaging way to learn about some of history’s more sordid details.

  • Please don’t nitpick

I love all the podcasts HH has. This was the first one I listened to. I have to say….the complaints about music and other arbitrary things are silly. You’re here to learn spicy history are you not? You’ll survive 30 seconds of music or a bit of banter between the host and guests. I adore Kate and always look forward to a new episode.

  • Hate the new show music!

For the love of the Gods, can you please revert back to your original soundtrack? This newer one is atrocious and doesn’t fit at all!!

Drives me crazy and it is sure to drive me away from a very good show.

Whose bloody idea was it anyway?!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How to Get Cancelled in Ancient Judea
Q: Was Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, a real person?
Yes, there is substantial historical evidence from sources like Paul's letters and other contemporary writings suggesting that Jesus was a real historical figure, a peasant from Nazareth who gathered followers and whose life and death were influential in early Christian communities.
Sex Work in Colonial India
Q: How did British colonial policies like the Contagious Diseases Act affect sex workers and their communities?
The act differentiated between 'respectable' white women and colonized bodies, enabling forced examinations and containment while often protecting white soldiers; it also intersected with caste, labor, and local power structures, triggering resistance and legal challenges over time.
Sex Work in Colonial India
Q: What brought you to studying India colonialism and sexuality?
Anjali discusses her personal background and scholarly motivation, emphasizing that histories of sexuality are rooted in lived experiences and biographical epistemologies, which push us to recover overlooked histories like Devadasis and Hijras.
The Depravity of the Marquis De Sade
Q: Can you explain the significance of the 120 Days of Sodom in the context of his imprisonment?
While imprisoned, Sade produced the most infamous work, a sprawling, brutal critique of power and sexuality that later became a focal point for debates about censorship, eroticism, and the boundaries between art and atrocity.
The Depravity of the Marquis De Sade
Q: What was his early life like, and how did that environment influence his later actions?
He was born into a highly privileged Parisian noble family, exposed to luxury and a sense that he could operate with impunity, which, coupled with troubled family dynamics, helped fuel a long pattern of transgressive and violent behavior.
