  • Hate the new show music!

For the love of the Gods, can you please revert back to your original soundtrack? This newer one is atrocious and doesn’t fit at all!!

Drives me crazy and it is sure to drive me away from a very good show.

Whose bloody idea was it anyway?!!

  • Always something new to learn!

My favourite thing about Betwixt is how open Kate is to admitting that she didn’t know something. It’s refreshing to hear an expert take on new information on real time and amend her views and knowledge bases. I’ve learnt so much (I’m still listening through the back catalogue)

  • My Favorite

I love to wind down for the day by listening to this podcast. I discovered it right before Thanksgiving and have listened to so many episodes. As somebody interested in history with a short attention span, this show captures my attention every time. I love every guest and I love Kate! Update: I really love all the episodes about literature and books. Little Mermaid, Wuthering Heights, and the Jane Austen episodes are some of my favorites. More of those!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside the Brothels of New Orleans
Q: Did the district keep strict rules about who could work there and how they dressed, or was it more lax once in operation?
There were formal rules about where and when prostitution could occur, with inspections and medical concerns discussed, but enforcement varied and often depended on the broader political climate and the district's boundaries, including permissions and restrictions that applied inside Storyville.
Inside the Brothels of New Orleans
Q: What does it mean that police would 'get graft' in Storyville, and how did that affect daily life there?
Graft meant regular bribes from brothel and bar owners to police officials, effectively buying police tolerance and reducing enforcement in Storyville to permit the district to operate and profit for many years.
Who Were The Vestal Virgins?
Q: What is a Vestal Virgin, and why was virginity so central to the role?
A Vestal Virgin tended the sacred fire of Vesta; virginity was tied to ritual purity and the belief that keeping the flame alight safeguarded Rome's fortunes.
The Victorian Sex Trafficking Panic
Q: How did you come to research the history of sex trafficking, and what sparked your focus on migration and labor?
Dr. Laite explains that her interest grew from studying prostitution in London and recognizing trafficking as a central component of sexual labor, which led her to examine broader migration patterns and the economic forces driving exploitation.
Sex & Scandal in Hollywood’s Golden Age
Q: How did Hollywood's early openness collide with the later push for censorship?
The industry started as a libertarian, free-for-all environment where anyone could make films with little oversight, especially in the 1910s and 1920s. As mass audiences and profits grew, moral watchdogs and religious groups pressed for censorship, culminating in the Hayes Code to regulate content and protect box office interests.
