  • Wonderful!

My first and still my favorite podcast! Detailed and interesting and they don’t leave any subject unanswered.

Like others would say, Janega is a dud. Not the right voice, not the right affect, not for this subject, not for this forum.

What I offer here is honest critique of a very real profession. This isn’t some podcast done out of somebody’s garage - these are professional historians, who, given the format, should come equipped with the skills for sharing their content via THIS PARTICULA... more

  • Matt Lewis is fabulous!

His episodes are so interesting and he’s an excellent interviewer. Janega lectures and doesn’t leave much room for her guests to share their knowledge. Her episodes are far less interesting because of that.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Mongols and the Fall of the Crusaders
Q: What were the main factors that weakened the Crusader States by the mid-13th century?
A combination of military overextension, strategic miscalculations in Egypt and Syria, complex local politics among Muslim powers, and rising Mongol pressure created a debilitating convergence that eroded Crusader hold and made long-term success unlikely.
Scotland's Medieval Queens
Q: What is the most striking contrast between Saint Margaret and later Scottish queens in terms of power and agency?
Saint Margaret is remembered as a foundational, almost mythic exemplar who actively shaped church and state, whereas later queens often faced harsher constraints, yet still exercised agency through education, regency opportunities, and strategic marriages, despite higher living risks and political volatility.
Scotland's Medieval Queens
Q: What stands out about the marriages and dynastic strategy of these queens, particularly Margaret's first experiences in Scotland?
Margaret entered a delicate alliance with Malcolm III, balancing her own beliefs with the needs of the realm; she used her position to advise and reform, yet remained mindful of maintaining relationships with England to stabilize succession and governance.
Scotland's Medieval Queens
Q: How did Saint Margaret influence the reform of the Scottish church and its alignment with Rome?
She helped formulate and implement key church reforms in Scotland, aligning practices with Roman Catholic norms, coordinating education and discipline, and guiding Lent observances and clerical customs, while also ensuring that her influence extended to her children's upbringing and education.
The Crusades: Battle for the Holy Land
Q: What were the key challenges of leadership and succession in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, especially around Melisande and Baldwin III/Baldwin II's era?
Leadership was often elective and shaped by dynastic alliances; Melisande wielded significant power as regent and co-sovereign with her husband Fulke von Anjou and later as guardian for her son Baldwin III, using marriages and patronage to secure loyalty and bolster fortifications, while ensuring the throne stayed within a capable line of rulers amid internal conflict and external threats.
