  • Ditch Janega !

She has the most annoying voice, accent and way of speaking! I need to take a break from this podcast until they get someone else. These days I only listen to the show when she not in it.

  • Gone Medieval Matt Lewis

I know we shouldn’t encourage you but all your podcasts regarding Richard III are simply fantastic and if I had the time I would listen to them all day!

Life was certainly cruel in Medieval times and for a man to be King for just two years and suffer the horrors which Richard III did, has encouraged many folks to think only the best of him.

Keep up the good work and I will keep listening to all your informative and amazing podcasts whenever I can.

  • Great Show!

I have been an ‘After Dark’ listener since that show started and have always meant to venture out to this show after the guest appearances from these hosts and just never got around to it. However, since Eleanor has been stepping into the role of Maddy there I’ve felt compelled to follow her because she’s just so brilliant!

The Women Who Ruled Medieval Burgundy, and Europe
Q: How central are women to the existence of this empire?
The discussion emphasizes that the Valois dukes could not have managed this without the women, highlighting Margaret of Mail, Margaret of York and Isabel of Portugal as pivotal figures who ruled, negotiated, and maintained power across territories.
The Women Who Ruled Medieval Burgundy, and Europe
Q: When we say Burgundy in the late Middle Ages, what are we actually talking about here?
Susan explains that Burgundy was an empire-like amalgamation of diverse territories with a powerful, centralized court under the Valois dukes, spanning Low Countries to parts of Northern France and the Holy Roman Empire.
A Complete History of Medieval Ireland
Q: How did Viking activity reshape Irish politics and city development?
Vikings integrated into Irish power structures, with southern Viking leaders like Brian Baru utilizing assimilated Norse allies to control key towns and establish a lasting Viking presence that could be co-opted into Irish dynastic politics rather than simply expelled.
A Complete History of Medieval Ireland
Q: What makes early medieval Ireland distinct from its European neighbors?
Ireland avoided external conquest by Rome and remained politically fragmented but culturally cohesive, with a cattle-based economy, a native legal system (Brehon law), and a church that operated independently of Rome for a long period, allowing Gaelic Christian practice to flourish.
The Betrayal of Thomas Becket
Q: How did Becket become connected with Henry II and the Canterbury ecclesiastical elite?
Becket's rise was facilitated by Archbishop Theobald, who supported him as chancellor and helped orchestrate his education and entry into the church, positioning him for influence at the royal court.
