  • Ditch Janega !

She has the most annoying voice, accent and way of speaking! I need to take a break from this podcast until they get someone else. These days I only listen to the show when she not in it.

  • Gone Medieval Matt Lewis

I know we shouldn’t encourage you but all your podcasts regarding Richard III are simply fantastic and if I had the time I would listen to them all day!

Life was certainly cruel in Medieval times and for a man to be King for just two years and suffer the horrors which Richard III did, has encouraged many folks to think only the best of him.

Keep up the good work and I will keep listening to all your informative and amazing podcasts whenever I can.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Matilda of Canossa: Medieval Italy's Iron Countess
Q: Can you do a brief recap for those who might not know what the investiture contest is?
The Investiture Controversy was a power struggle between the secular rulers and the papacy over who had the authority to appoint bishops and abbots; Gregory VII asserted papal prerogatives, while Henry IV pressed for imperial rights, leading to excommunications and political upheaval that shaped governance for decades.
Cadaver Synod: Trial of a Dead Pope
Q: What does the case tell us about the role of the papacy in politics at the time?
It shows the papacy as deeply entangled with secular power, where aristocratic families leveraged the throne for land, influence, and protection, making pontificates highly contested and volatile.
Cadaver Synod: Trial of a Dead Pope
Q: What was the cadaver synod and why did it happen?
It was a trial conducted by Pope Stephen VI against Pope Formosus, who had died nine months earlier; it emerged from intense factional rivalries in Rome where elites sought to control papal legitimacy and political power.
After Agincourt: Henry V's French Campaigns
Q: So can you just give us a bit of a brief overview of how Henry V ended up in France fighting this kind of legendary battle?
The host and Bartlett outline how Henry V inherited a kingdom exhausted by internal strife, sought to emulate Edward III's glories, and used the Agincourt victory as a springboard for a prolonged campaign in France that required new naval and logistical approaches, alliances, and a broader, long-term strategy rather than a single climactic battle.
Saving Byzantium
Q: What was the Florence union and why did it fail to save Byzantium?
The Council of Florence aimed to reunite the Eastern and Western churches under Papal leadership, hopeful that Western military aid would follow; despite some success in signing a decree, the union was deeply contested at home, resisted by many Byzantines, and ultimately collapsed, contributing to the empire's fall.
