  • We?

I love the European medieval stuff. But the rest of the world existed during the medieval period as well, and I’m sure just as interesting. I guess the opening line saying “who we really were” doesn’t include the rest of us.

Love the podcast. After getting 2 AI adverts in the intro ad block I’ll be giving it a pass for a few months. Will check back 2026 to see if they’re still running. I will not willingly support any AI advertising business.

  • Great podcast

I’m always a bit lazy with review but this podcast is deserving of an excellent history podcast. Well researched, trustworthy, good experts. Amazing series was the one on Nordic Mythology, loved every moment of this.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lizard Shampoo, Potions & Remedies
Q: Was it surprising to you to find that there are more than double the number of manuscripts that have medical information from the first millennium?
It was amazing. We've been to Poland, we've been to America, we're looking all over the place. And so we're just acquiring more and more and more.
Medieval Hallowe'en
Q: Alex, I wonder if you could tell us a little bit about the role that folklore plays alongside religion?
I don't think either [folklore or religion] nullifies the other; they co-exist and folklore took on a lot of the folkloric practice.
Medieval Hallowe'en
Q: Amy, I wondered if you could tell us a little bit about why the 31st of October, in particular, has become significant and why we associate it with spooky stuff?
The 31st of October through to about the 1st or 2nd of November is seen as a time of the dead of reflection and that kind of thing, associated with the dead in the All-Hallow Tide festivals.
Owain Glyndwr, Welsh Rebel
Q: How does Glyndwr's story demonstrate the political dynamics of 14th-century Wales?
His rebellion reflects the interplay of local grievances against English rule, historical divisions among Welsh factions, and the broader European political landscape.
Owain Glyndwr, Welsh Rebel
Q: What does it mean for Welsh people today that Glyndwr is such an iconic figure in their history?
Glyndwr represents Welsh identity and nationhood, and his legacy is a cornerstone in contemporary discussions about Welsh independence.
