  • Ditch Janega !

She has the most annoying voice, accent and way of speaking! I need to take a break from this podcast until they get someone else. These days I only listen to the show when she not in it.

  • Gone Medieval Matt Lewis

I know we shouldn’t encourage you but all your podcasts regarding Richard III are simply fantastic and if I had the time I would listen to them all day!

Life was certainly cruel in Medieval times and for a man to be King for just two years and suffer the horrors which Richard III did, has encouraged many folks to think only the best of him.

Keep up the good work and I will keep listening to all your informative and amazing podcasts whenever I can.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Seljuk Turks
Q: How did internal dynastic divisions within the Seljuks influence the broader regional dynamics with the Crusaders and Fatimids?
Morton discusses how fragmentations allowed external powers to exploit civil strife, create shifting alliances, and permit Crusader advances, while regional governors sometimes allied with Crusaders to preserve their own power, illustrating a complex, non-binary political landscape.
The Seljuk Turks
Q: What were the key factors that made nomadic horsemen so effective in this period, compared to more sedentary military forces?
He highlights mobility, exceptional endurance, logistics-light operations, and feigned flight tactics as core advantages of nomadic armies, which could strike quickly, disrupt supply lines, and outmaneuver heavier, more costly forces.
The Seljuk Turks
Q: So I wonder if you could give us, kind of give us the headline, give us the tagline here. Who were the Seljuk Turks, and why should we care about them?
Morton explains the Seljuks as a major nomadic confederation that moved into Persia and the Levant around the turn of the 11th century, integrating with local bureaucracies while maintaining strong nomadic military traditions, and argues their impact on settlement patterns, governance, and regional power rivalries far beyond their borders.
Hildegard of Bingen - Prophetess, Composer, Mystic
Q: What was the turning point that propelled her to greater influence within the church?
A pivotal moment came when her visions attracted the attention of Volmer, a monk, whose documentation and advocacy led to papal interest, ultimately earning Pope Eugenius III's sanction and enabling her to influence high church authorities.
Hildegard of Bingen - Prophetess, Composer, Mystic
Q: So can you tell me a little bit about her early life?
Hildegard's early life was spent in an anchorhold setting with close companionship, where intensive education and early visions began after being given to the church by her noble family, shaping her later role as a writer, healer, and spiritual leader.
