  • Anne in the Tower

One of my favourite episodes - I had no idea that so much correspondence existed from the time she was imprisoned. How she showed concern for her mother and brother really brought it home what an awful situation everyone was in. And as for Uncle Norfolk… I too had a low opinion of him but this just confirmed it .

Thoroughly enjoyed the episode about Accidental Death with Prof Steven Gunn. Very interesting to hear how the available data informed the research. Made me want to dive in to documents in the Archives again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 348 - A New History of Tudor England with Professor Nandini Das
Q: What are the fundamental ideas you are exploring in this book?
The core is the instability of belonging and identity, demonstrated through people moving in and out, which shows that nationhood is formed through contact and exchange as much as through centralized narratives.
Episode 348 - A New History of Tudor England with Professor Nandini Das
Q: Was there a particular moment or something that inspired you to look at this period?
I came to the period thinking I knew it, but once I opened the archives, the world misbehaved and revealed how deeply entangled these lives and movements were, challenging the island narrative.
Episode 346 - Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion with Martha Tatarnic
Q: Why is it important to rethink how we tell the stories of historical women today?
Reframing these histories reveals how narrative power can perpetuate inequality and violence against women, and it also highlights the ongoing potential for women to lead in faith communities and beyond, aligning with broader efforts toward truth and representation.
Episode 346 - Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion with Martha Tatarnic
Q: How do you view Anne's role in the Reformation—as catalyst or architect?
While she is often labeled as a catalyst, the evidence suggests she acted as an architect who actively placed key figures in power, such as Cranmer and Parker, thereby shaping Anglican theology and the direction of the English church.
Episode 346 - Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion with Martha Tatarnic
Q: What initially sparked your interest in writing about Anne Boleyn and the English Reformation?
A personal realization during seminary and a reflection on how representations of Anne have shifted over time led me to foreground my own perspective and ask why her story matters beyond the traditional narrative. This approach also emerged after reading scholarship that emphasized how bias shapes even non-fiction representations of historical figures.
