Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 346 - Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion with Martha Tatarnic
Q: Why is it important to rethink how we tell the stories of historical women today?
Reframing these histories reveals how narrative power can perpetuate inequality and violence against women, and it also highlights the ongoing potential for women to lead in faith communities and beyond, aligning with broader efforts toward truth and representation.
Episode 346 - Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion with Martha Tatarnic
Q: How do you view Anne's role in the Reformation—as catalyst or architect?
While she is often labeled as a catalyst, the evidence suggests she acted as an architect who actively placed key figures in power, such as Cranmer and Parker, thereby shaping Anglican theology and the direction of the English church.
Episode 346 - Anne Boleyn: Reputation, Revolution, Religion with Martha Tatarnic
Q: What initially sparked your interest in writing about Anne Boleyn and the English Reformation?
A personal realization during seminary and a reflection on how representations of Anne have shifted over time led me to foreground my own perspective and ask why her story matters beyond the traditional narrative. This approach also emerged after reading scholarship that emphasized how bias shapes even non-fiction representations of historical figures.
Episode 344 - Bess of Hardwick: An Elizabethan Magnate with Dr Wyn Derbyshire
Q: How did Bess's marriages influence her wealth and status?
Each marriage elevated her social standing and provided financial leverage; notably, the Cavendish marriage brought wealth via confiscated monastery assets, while subsequent marriages and inheritance solidified her control over large estates and led to a prominent role in Tudor society.
Episode 344 - Bess of Hardwick: An Elizabethan Magnate with Dr Wyn Derbyshire
Q: What formal position did Bess hold at court, and how did she come to acquire it?
Bess eventually became Lady of the Privy Chamber after marrying her third husband, likely as a recognition or 'gift' from Elizabeth I, while she continued to manage estates and support her husbands' ventures.
