  • Couldn’t Stop Listening

The episode on Edward IV is beyond brilliant. Matt provides broad historical context and chronicled details about Edward and many in his circle. Normally I’d break the podcast into two parts, but I couldn’t stop listening to this one! Thank you Rebecca and Matt!

  • Pros and Cons

Great topics and many excellent guest speakers, but…less is more, as in, produce less with better content and less inane banter from Rebecca. It’s not funny, clever or interesting and one suspects guests may be starting to feel the same about being on the show.

This show used to be fun and educational. Now the silliness and giggling have become too distracting. You had a good thing going; please get your show back on the rails.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Henry VI: From Crisis to Civil War
Q: Would you say that after 1450, Henry VI still had a chance to save his reign, or was everything after that simply delaying the inevitable?
The hosts argue that Henry had limited options and repeatedly failed to decisively remove York as a threat, choosing to delay action rather than settle the power struggle, which prolonged a fraught governance and allowed rival factions to gain the upper hand; ultimate stability depended on strong leadership and willingness to take drastic measures, which Henry consistently resisted.
The House of Boleyn: History Meets Fiction
Q: Is there a particular storyline in the book that you enjoyed writing the most?
Yes, the Margaret storyline and the imagined implications about Anne's hidden affections added a poignant layer; I also enjoyed deepening the bond between Anne and her father Thomas, highlighting a tender family dynamic that challenges the usual portrayal of the Boleyns as purely calculating.
Henry VII: What Ifs & Misconceptions
Q: What if Henry VII had remarried after Elizabeth of York had died?
The discussion concludes that while a second marriage might not dramatically change the overall trajectory, it could affect potential heirs and the political alliances, depending on who the new wife was and how the arrangement interacted with Parliament's succession protections.
Henry VII: What Ifs & Misconceptions
Q: Would anything have been different about English history if Edmund Tudor had lived?
Amin explains that Edmund Tudor's survival could have shifted power dynamics among early Tudor supporters, potentially altering the balance of threats the future king faced, though the exact outcome remains speculative.
Henry VII: What Ifs & Misconceptions
Q: What do you think would have happened to a young Henry if he hadn't gone into exile with Jasper?
Nathen Amin suggests he would likely have been killed, as Yorkist rivals sought to eliminate Lancastrian threats, and Henry's survival depended on exile and seizing opportunities later.
