  • Love Matt Lewis

I loved this episode! I’ve only recently come to the story of Matilda but Matt’s telling of her life was so enjoyable, funny, and had me zoned in for the entire hour. I listen to Matt’s podcast as well, and these last two weeks of him joining Rebecca have been so great.

Especially enjoy when Matt Smith is on as a guest! I appreciate that he’s not afraid to think “outside the box”. Will be listening to your most recent interview with him again. Who doesn’t love a good mystery? 😃

  • Too much chatter

This show has so much potential to be good — I see the titles of the episodes and get excited for the topic and then literally half of the show is just talking about nothing relevant and it makes it impossible to listen. It’s not that I don’t like hosts who talk—it’s a great way to get to know the host, but ladies, you’ve got to try to stay on topic.

  • Used to love this show for years, but not anymore

Podcast has become excessively chatty in recent years especially when Dr. Emma is on. The constant giggly chitchat is annoying and I have to sift through schoolgirl gossip to find Tudor topics. The chattiness, banter and nonstop laughter get on my nerves. I love Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn but not when other topics are up for discussion. I unsubscribed.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Queen Who Never Was: Empress Matilda
Q: What was the turning point that shifted Matilda's focus from direct rule to securing her son's inheritance?
After prolonged conflict and the realization that she could not secure the throne herself, Matilda redirected her efforts toward protecting Henry's inheritance and ensuring a smooth transition through his line, effectively sidelining her own claim.
The Queen Who Never Was: Empress Matilda
Q: How did Matilda's marriage to Geoffrey of Anjou affect her claim and the English succession?
The marriage created a powerful French-English alliance that promised a strong political base and a potential grandson to solidify Matilda's claim, though her personal reluctance and the political realities of the time complicated the plan.
Henry Wotton: Wit, Secrecy, and the Art of Diplomacy
Q: What was the significance of the interdict issued by the Pope against Venice?
The interdict was a major confrontation between the Pope and the Venetian Republic, and it provided Wotton the opportunity to position England as a protector of Venetian sovereignty.
Henry Wotton: Wit, Secrecy, and the Art of Diplomacy
Q: Can you describe Wotton's educational journey and how it prepared him for diplomacy?
Wotton had a humanist education starting at Winchester College and later Oxford, where he learned from key figures in international law, shaping his diplomatic skills.
Henry Wotton: Wit, Secrecy, and the Art of Diplomacy
Q: What was it about Henry Wotton that inspired you to write a book?
Henry Wotton is often a footnote in history despite being a well-known figure of the Tudor period, and his story parallels Shakespeare's themes of comedy and tragedy, which captured my interest.
