  • Love

This is a really great podcast - interesting guests, topics, and a very engaging host.

If you enjoy others shows like “Talking Tudors” and “Not Just The Tudors”, you will love this.

ONE DOWNSIDE (and why I’m marking 4 stars for an otherwise 5-star pod) is that 50% of the show is behind a paywall. These aren’t just “bonus” Patreon episodes, or “early release for subscribers” episodes— you literally can’t listen to HALF of all the episodes unless you pay. That really sucks. I’ve never seen a pod... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Beheading Game, Author Interview with Rebecca Leeman
Q: What inspired the romance with Alice, and how did that shape the story?
Alice was a fully invented character who becomes Anne's ally and later partner, providing a counterpoint to the male-dominated power dynamics of the period. Their evolving relationship adds depth and explores themes of equality and female empowerment.
The Beheading Game, Author Interview with Rebecca Leeman
Q: How did you balance historical authenticity with magical elements?
I treated most of the world as real and plausible while keeping the magic tightly scoped to Anne's experience, not letting it overwhelm the historical backdrop. I set clear boundaries for where magic could and could not influence events, inspired by structures like magical realism rather than full fantasy.
The Beheading Game, Author Interview with Rebecca Leeman
Q: Can you summarize the premise and how you approached rewriting Anne Boleyn's story?
The Beheading Game starts with Anne waking up after her execution, surviving with her head still attached, and embarking on a mission to prevent Henry VIII from marrying again, all while navigating a world that blends historical settings with a controlled element of magic. I aimed to ground the historical parts in careful research but allow one fantastical premise to drive the narrative forward.
Anne Boleyn - Reputation, Revolution and Religion, with Martha Tatarnic
Q: If you had the opportunity to ask Anne Boleyn a single question, what would you ask her?
I would ask how she really felt about Henry, exploring the nuances of her personal stake in their marriage, whether she felt truly drawn to him as a partner or primarily saw him as a vehicle to advance reform and education for women, and how she navigated that complex dynamic.
Anne Boleyn - Reputation, Revolution and Religion, with Martha Tatarnic
Q: If you had the ability to jump in a time travel machine and witness a single moment from Anne Boleyn's life, what would you choose?
I would choose the moment when she joined Claude's court and was exposed to a forward-thinking circle of reformers, because it reveals how early experiences with education, religious ideas, and public life shaped her goals and approach to power, and it helps explain why she mattered so much to reform movements.
