  • Love

This is a really great podcast - interesting guests, topics, and a very engaging host.

If you enjoy others shows like “Talking Tudors” and “Not Just The Tudors”, you will love this.

ONE DOWNSIDE (and why I’m marking 4 stars for an otherwise 5-star pod) is that 50% of the show is behind a paywall. These aren’t just “bonus” Patreon episodes, or “early release for subscribers” episodes— you literally can’t listen to HALF of all the episodes unless you pay. That really sucks. I’ve never seen a pod... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Relationship between Mary and Elizabeth, the Tudor princesses, with Dr Peter Stiffell
Q: What happened to Elizabeth during the 1553–1554 crisis, and what was Mary's response?
Elizabeth was kept separate, summoned to court for support but ultimately not central to the initial overthrow; after the turmoil, Mary's camp prevailed, and Elizabeth faced interrogation and house arrest, with Mary choosing to spare her due to familial ties.
The Relationship between Mary and Elizabeth, the Tudor princesses, with Dr Peter Stiffell
Q: How much contact did Mary have with Elizabeth during the infant years?
Mary was placed to look after Elizabeth as a toddler but generally kept at a distance in practice, with Mary expressing reluctance about the situation and later developing a protective, almost motherly stance as Elizabeth grew.
Regina, A New History of Women and Power with Professor Kate Williams
Q: If you could ask one of the women in your book a single question, who and what would you ask?
The host would want to ask Elizabeth I what she really thought about her policies and succession, acknowledging that any answer would be speculative but would reveal how she viewed her own legacy.
Regina, A New History of Women and Power with Professor Kate Williams
Q: Introduce the book for me. What does it ultimately set out to achieve?
The book surveys female monarchy and power across cultures and eras, detailing how women ruled, how they were perceived, and how myths around their leadership have shaped history and our understanding of power.
The Life of Queen Elizabeth Woodville with Dr Lacey Bonar-Hull
Q: How did Elizabeth navigate the hostile environment of the kingmaker's hostility and the rebellion against Edward IV, and what does that say about her political agency?
She strategically aligned with her family and faction to protect her position, used marriages within her kin network to extend influence, and persisted through sanctuary and peril to preserve her lineage and power for her children.
