Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

129. Why Teaching Grammar Feels so Hard and How to Make it Click
Q: Why does grammar feel so overwhelming for teachers?
Because educators often internalize the belief that they must know all grammar perfectly and conform to an antiquated, worksheet-heavy culture; reframing grammar as a set of tools for meaning and starting with simple, engaging sentence-level activities can reduce this pressure.
126. Devices Don’t Fix Schools - Intentional Technology Integration Does
Q: What has changed your mind about education in recent years, given the rapid evolution of technology and AI?
One key realization is that a single educator can make a big difference by staying purposeful, iterative, and risk-tolerant; education benefits when teachers blend tech with hands-on, student-centered projects and pursue entrepreneurship and leadership instead of relying solely on tradition.
126. Devices Don’t Fix Schools - Intentional Technology Integration Does
Q: Can you explain the difference between EdTech and TechEd and why that distinction matters for teachers and students?
EdTech is about how technology influences instruction and assessment, while TechEd focuses on the actual skills students must acquire with technology—guided by standards like ISTE—so teachers know not just what tools to use but what competencies to develop.
126. Devices Don’t Fix Schools - Intentional Technology Integration Does
Q: How does TechPlan Genie help districts manage technology planning from audit to execution, and what role does data play in that process?
TechPlan Genie standardizes a school-wide tech plan, automates audit data, tracks progress through monthly prompts, generates end-of-year reports, and incorporates stakeholder voices via surveys and an AI genie to foresee concerns and tailor rollout; data drives decisions and accountability.
126. Devices Don’t Fix Schools - Intentional Technology Integration Does
Q: What made technology both an opportunity and a challenge in Puerto Rico's underfunded schools, and what roadblocks did you hit along the way?
The opportunity was the ability to leapfrog limited resources by introducing scalable tech solutions, but challenges included a fragile teacher workforce, few trained educators, and infrastructure gaps; roadblocks included staffing shortages, inexperienced teachers, and high mainland brain drain, which required hands-on capacity-building and community buy-in to sustain improvements.
