  • Good info but sound like giddy teenagers

I subscribed to this for a while, but had to quit because I cannot stand all the laughing. I feel like I’m listening to a couple of teenagers who giggle about every comment they make. Just stick with the good topics that you address and cut back on the laughing!

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Listen Again] Why Knowledge Matters for Comprehension with Daniel Willingham & Barbara Davidson
Q: Why is equity a core consideration in knowledge-building for reading instruction?
Because access to rich background knowledge varies by socioeconomic status, curricula must be designed to provide high-quality knowledge opportunities to all students, not just those with advantaged home environments.
[Listen Again] Why Knowledge Matters for Comprehension with Daniel Willingham & Barbara Davidson
Q: What does a knowledge-rich curriculum look like in practice?
It uses deep, topic-based units with authentic texts, integrated writing, and deliberate sequencing to build broad and deep background knowledge across subjects, rather than random, isolated content.
[Listen Again] Why Knowledge Matters for Comprehension with Daniel Willingham & Barbara Davidson
Q: How does knowledge-building fit into the broader science of reading beyond phonics?
Knowledge-building is essential for both simple decoding and higher-order thinking; it helps readers resolve ambiguity, build inferences, and understand connections across sentences and texts, which underpins comprehension.
The Research on Vocabulary Instruction with Margaret McKeown
Q: How should teachers balance tier 2 words with domain-specific terms in science or social studies?
Maintain a persistent core of tier 2 words for deep understanding, while introducing domain-specific terms as they arise in meaningful contexts, using tiered practice and ongoing reinforcement.
The Research on Vocabulary Instruction with Margaret McKeown
Q: What is the most effective way to introduce a high-utility word if students are not on the ladder yet?
Wait until after initial reading to introduce the word in context, then build meaning through discussion and multiple encounters, ensuring it fits within the text and surrounding ideas rather than isolating the word before reading.
