  • Good info but sound like giddy teenagers

I subscribed to this for a while, but had to quit because I cannot stand all the laughing. I feel like I’m listening to a couple of teenagers who giggle about every comment they make. Just stick with the good topics that you address and cut back on the laughing!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Research-Based Shifts to Strengthen Phonemic Awareness with Marianne Rice
Q: What should teachers look for in their curriculum to ensure it emphasizes phonemic awareness at the phoneme level?
Look for explicit references to phoneme-level tasks (phoneme isolation, blending, segmenting) in the scope and sequence, and watch for how activities are connected to print rather than focusing solely on larger phonological skills like rhyming or syllables.
Word Chaining for Building Phonemic Awareness with Anjanette McNeely
Q: How does word chaining fit with other routines like dictation or soundboxes?
Word chaining can be integrated with soundboxes and dictation is done separately to minimize cognitive load; chaining speeds up word-building and can be adapted to include handwriting.
Word Chaining for Building Phonemic Awareness with Anjanette McNeely
Q: If someone's listening and they've never done a word chain, how would you describe this activity to those teachers?
A word chain is a carefully chosen sequence of words that interweaves encoding and decoding, helping students learn common spellings and notice similarities and differences to support orthographic mapping.
[Listen Again] Why Knowledge Matters for Comprehension with Daniel Willingham & Barbara Davidson
Q: Why is equity a core consideration in knowledge-building for reading instruction?
Because access to rich background knowledge varies by socioeconomic status, curricula must be designed to provide high-quality knowledge opportunities to all students, not just those with advantaged home environments.
[Listen Again] Why Knowledge Matters for Comprehension with Daniel Willingham & Barbara Davidson
Q: What does a knowledge-rich curriculum look like in practice?
It uses deep, topic-based units with authentic texts, integrated writing, and deliberate sequencing to build broad and deep background knowledge across subjects, rather than random, isolated content.
