  • A great voice for excellence in teaching reading

I’ve been a fan of Anna through her podcast, and now her excellent book, for years. I am an avid podcast consumer, and Anna was built for podcasting. She is genuine, knowledgeable, generous, engaging, and she thinks well on the fly, always asking insightful questions of her guests. It doesn’t hurt that she has a great voice for podcasting as well. I look forward to every episode. Her recent series on the great work in the Cudahy schools gives me hope that we actually can teach all kids to read. ... more

  • My Absolute Favorite

Anna GETS what it’s like to be a teacher. Her episodes are brief but have the greatest nuggets of information and tips that you can use the SAME DAY to help your students. This podcast was the PERFECT introduction to the Science of Reading. It’s where I, as an 18 year veteran teacher, first learned the basics of SoR. She does not talk down to you, but presents in a way that puts you at ease and excites you to try new things all at once.

I recommend this to ALL teachers, coaches, administrators... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Listen again] Navigating the complexities of English spelling - with Lyn Stone
Q: What does good spelling practice look like, and what should teachers avoid?
Good practice involves three elements: analyzing word structure, linking with related words in the same family, and using a consistent 'spelling voice' to memorize sequences. Teachers should avoid activities that focus solely on visual memory or random letter sequences, such as staring at words or jumbles, which impede long-term retention of correct spellings.
[Listen again] Navigating the complexities of English spelling - with Lyn Stone
Q: Could you explain why you think rules should be taught in spelling and how they should be taught in practice?
Rules exist as a real part of the orthographic system, and learners benefit from understanding them with a clear rationale. The aim is to give students enough linguistic scaffolding—terms like vowel, consonant, digraph, and morpheme—so they can make high-quality decisions about letter sequences even in the absence of direct teaching, through deliberate, high-quality practice.
[Listen again] Evidence-based practices in teaching writing - with Dr. Steve Graham
Q: What is your view on writing workshops and keeping flexibility in instruction?
Process approaches like writers' workshops have demonstrated positive effects, but they should be used flexibly with ongoing modeling, feedback, and opportunities to revise rather than rigidly following every step; balance with foundational skills and integration across subjects.
[Listen again] Evidence-based practices in teaching writing - with Dr. Steve Graham
Q: How much time should students spend writing each day, and does it vary by grade?
There isn't a universal data-driven answer yet, but guidelines from What Works Clearinghouse have suggested around an hour per day for elementary students, split between teaching and writing; however, real-world practice shows time often varies and must be adapted to context.
[Listen again] Evidence-based practices in teaching writing - with Dr. Steve Graham
Q: What does it mean to use evidence-based practices in teaching writing?
It means using the best available evidence from research to inform teaching while integrating teachers' professional knowledge and the specific needs of their students, rather than blindly following a single study or a rigid protocol.
