  • Not teacher friendly

I’ve listened to about half a dozen of these episodes and I don’t know if just happens to be the ones I pick, but there always seems to be a strong anti-teacher, anti-public school message. I found this podcast because I am interested in the science of reading, but it’s honestly hard to stay open minded and learn when teachers are assumed to not give a darn about their students and their education.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Spring Special '26: Assessment as your best friend, with Kate Winn and Stephanie Stollar, Ph.D.
Q: What is the core purpose of assessment according to the book?
Assessment serves multiple purposes within a framework like MTSS: universal screening to identify needs, diagnostic tools to specify instructional targets, progress monitoring to track trends, and outcome assessment to evaluate overall effectiveness, all while guiding timely instructional decisions.
S10 E14: Your comprehension questions answered, with Nathaniel Swain, Ph.D.
Q: What did Ben from the UK want to know about comprehension when reading a text versus listening to a concept explained orally?
The guest explains that oral language includes utterances that may be abandoned mid-sentence and gestures; when reading a written text, you must convey all those nuances through language conventions like punctuation and structure, which can change how information is understood. Both modalities can effectively convey concepts, but writing requires careful use of language to replicate those nuances.
S10 E12: Filling the gaps with inferences, with Kristen McMaster, Ph.D.
Q: How can teachers help students develop inferencing skills?
Teachers can explicitly teach what an inference is, model it during lessons, and ask targeted questions.
S10 E12: Filling the gaps with inferences, with Kristen McMaster, Ph.D.
Q: What are different types of inferences?
Different types of inferences include causal inferences, bridging inferences, elaborative inferences, and referential inferences.
S10 E12: Filling the gaps with inferences, with Kristen McMaster, Ph.D.
Q: Can you provide a definition of comprehension?
Comprehension is how we make sense of the world around us by integrating new information with what we already know.
