These ladies, through their podcast, help me learn and advocate for my son. Because of their hard work, passion and honesty, they bring research (often directly from the researchers mouths), teachers, and parents together, to have real talk, and help everyone improve supporting all students.

  • The Details Matter

Do the hosts land on the side of research? Most often, yes. Thank goodness. However, their “Devil’s Advocacy” is often worrisome, as it sends mixed messages to teachers who have not had coaching on structured literacy. I also question the hosts’ dedication to knowing their guests’ and understanding their guests’ perspectives prior to interviews. Is the goal to roast their guests? Not cool. The facilitation sounds unrehearsed and the production quality is poor, often echoed and tinny. Finally, an... more

  • Grateful Principal

As a principal with seven years of experience in a high-needs elementary school, I have spent countless hours trying to sift through the noise when it comes to reading instruction. The pressure to raise reading scores is real. I’ve attended countless PD sessions, subscribed to journals, and spoken with curriculum reps and other administrators and teachers, yet I often walked away feeling more frustrated than confident.

Why Most School Initiatives Fail and What Actually Works-Live from researchED
Q: What changes have you made in your school district that are based on the science of reading and learning?
We shifted from a balanced literacy approach to a more structured, systematic phonics framework, implemented with the Reading League, and restructured interventions to be fluid and skill-based, guided by implementation science and data.
Reid Lyon Episode:The Takeaways That Matter Most Without The BS
Q: What is the role of language in student outcomes according to Reid Lyon's findings?
Language development is foundational to reading; strong oral language supports decoding, comprehension, and the ability to benefit from instruction, so schools should prioritize language as a core pillar of literacy.
Reid Lyon Episode:The Takeaways That Matter Most Without The BS
Q: How should parents engage with the data and the system to support their child?
Parents should become informed, request data reports, ask specific questions about skills their child is struggling with, see how often interventions occur, and push for transparent communication between home and school.
Reid Lyon Episode:The Takeaways That Matter Most Without The BS
Q: What would be something that every administrator would benefit from after watching Reid Lyon's episode?
David emphasizes establishing a common language across the school, ensuring teachers and administrators understand and use the same terminology, and recognizing the need for evidence-based decisions rooted in classroom realities rather than siloed approaches.
The Truth About Small Group Reading Instruction and Why Nell Duke Says It Should Be Used Wisely
Q: How should teachers handle phonics and decoding for students who already read above grade level?
Phonics and decoding should still be taught in a way that engages all students, using varied scaffolding, mixing patterns with other words, and providing opportunities for challenging tasks within a lively, interactive whole-class context.
