  • OG Listener- Carmen from Historias Unknown

I’ve been listening since the OG days of Cerebronas, to the point that I can’t even remember how I discovered the podcast. I continue to listen, because of the important topics Yvette covers that I’m also so passionate about and as a fellow Salvi- I love that she prioritizes Central American voices and stories. I always learn something new and also new books to add to my TBR. Anyway, I can go on and on about this podcast and Yvette’s work so I’ll just end by saying listen to this podcast!!

Participatory Deportation Defense: Becoming Abogades de Confianza
Q: How do abogades de confianza navigate professional ethics and the rule of law when the system is unjust?
They acknowledge conflicts but argue for changes to ethics rules to allow movement-oriented defense, emphasizing deep client-lawyer collaboration and strategic use of privilege and non-traditional advocacy.
The Easy Way To Learn Your Rights
Q: What inspired you lately that keeps you motivated in this work?
A vision board and an underground rights tour that connect local social justice groups, churches, and communities to run legal literacy workshops, translating energy into concrete, actionable efforts.
The Easy Way To Learn Your Rights
Q: How does Emeffen seek to grow the impact of participatory defense beyond individual cases?
By pairing legal literacy with criminal defense organizing to prevent criminalization, build broader community support, and create a scalable model that expands collaboration across organizations and jurisdictions.
The Easy Way To Learn Your Rights
Q: Why did you describe the legal system as the Criminal Justice System of Oppression?
Because the system inherently disadvantages the poor and marginalized, especially through lack of access to resources, supporting a cycle of disenfranchisement that education and civic participation can help break.
The Easy Way To Learn Your Rights
Q: So to start off, what does Emeffen do and why did you choose that name for your organization?
Emeffen is a framework for proactive legal advocacy that combines legal literacy training, advocacy training, and lawyer coaching to empower marginalized communities to understand and exercise their rights, challenging systemic oppression at the source rather than reacting after harm occurs.
