  • Sinner’s viewers, movie catalogue

Solid discussion and episode. I love tuning in especially on my commute to work. I will say I just had a little pushback on when it was discussed that those big advocates of the movie or who lead the charge had not/or don’t show up for other films of similar nature. Who exactly was being referred to in that part of discussion, is it the black viewers who in my opinion constantly show up or were you talking about the white audience and the Hollywood machine? And I do agree with the sentiment wher... more

  • Love the Pod, Even When I Disagree

Code Switch is a go-to podcast for me. My most recent fave: The episode on Tribal College. Now, I’m shocked and disappointed by the Sinners review episode. Perhaps that’s just because I lived the movie, but I also didn’t find the commentary to be all that intellectually grounded or mentally stimulating. Sounded like a lot of hateration. Nonetheless, this pod is valued and I highly recommend it overall!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the Confederacy to the White House: How Southern beauty traditions went MAGA
Q: Can you give us examples of how subwomen in the MAGA movement perform their gender?
The guest describes extensive cosmetic procedures, emphasis on jawlines and veneers, and a visual presentation designed to signal alignment with a very particular political and cultural ideal, showing how appearance communicates loyalty to the movement.
The Scouts are too woke, according to Pete Hegseth
Q: Firstly, what do you think about Hegseth's critique of Scouting America?
Historically, Hegseth's critique is inaccurate. The Scouts were always a civilian organization with a broad impulse toward inclusion, and the 1910s-30s era already showed early DEI tendencies that evolved into the 20th century, not a retreat to some 'traditional' form.
Why Iranian perspectives often get flattened and caricatured
Q: Can you talk a little bit about that universe of people who want an end to the regime but do not want American military intervention?
This segment of the Iranian opposition is the most organic and grassroots, and they stand to change the system without foreign interference; they argue for internal change and for avoiding external military solutions, which is a perspective that deserves more attention.
How the internet got gentrified
Q: Did the gentrification happen after you sort of started paying attention or was it something that was already happening?
Lingel explains it was already happening and identifies Facebook as the platform that started that shift with real-name policies and broader access over time.
The U.S., Cuba, and the people caught between
Q: How do you think Trump's mass deportation of Cubans will play out at the voting booth?
There's a growing discomfort in the Cuban American community regarding these deportations, which may impact local political representatives.
