  • Delightful show; I look forward to every new episode. As someone who doesn't tend to follow pop culture very closely, this helps keep me up-to-date on current events and gives me a better appreciation for things I'd otherwise be disinterested in. Brittany is a wonderful host and does an excellent job balancing serious subject matter with humor. Thanks for keeping my week interesting!

I knew about It’s Been a Minute when Sam hosted but was never into it. This week, I came across a reference to an episode on an internet video, came over to listen to the full thing, and have binged 4 episodes thus far.

Brittany is a high quality interviewer and sprinkles in just enough commentary along with questions. I adore the show and can’t wait to have it in my daily/weekly rotation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Queer Third Spaces Matter
Q: How has the Internet changed the culture of queer spaces?
Lucas notes that the Internet expanded possibilities for exploration and connection, but shifted spaces from in-person, embodied experiences to online signals, with consequences for historical record and navigation of venues; Erik adds that social media can homogenize experiences like Drag Brunch and alter how communities encounter one another.
Why Queer Third Spaces Matter
Q: Do you have a favorite queer third space, and why is it your favorite?
Lucas highlights historical queer coffee shops like Cafe Weird in Minneapolis and the Blue Moon, illustrating how such spaces foster inclusivity and community beyond bars, while Erik shares his affinity for diners as welcoming spaces for conversations and community building, especially when bars close late at night.
So you've changed. Will it stick?
Q: What is the balance between changing oneself and changing the world, and how does the Internet affect this?
It's a balance between inward work and outward action; the Internet accelerates and amplifies identity experiments, making it harder to discern what is truly authentic versus what is performed for attention, which pressures individuals to navigate both spheres.
So you've changed. Will it stick?
Q: How do we evaluate whether someone's change is genuine, especially in high-stakes contexts like parole hearings?
Transformation is a communal thing; parole boards require a showing of insight, accountability, and a public demonstration of change, not just private feelings of regret, and the evaluation is a mix of psychology, performance, and social buy-in.
So you've changed. Will it stick?
Q: What compelled you to look into this topic of personal change?
I began with an intellectual idea for a book, but I realized I was also trying to understand my own transformations, which drew me into exploring addiction, identity shifts, and how culture judges change.
