  • Top-Notch Financial Advice

Having worked with a variety of financial advisors over the years, I can say that Ben Utley is the most experienced, holistically-oriented, and well-informed FP that I have worked with. He has sharp insight into the minds and work worlds of physicians, yet the topics discussed in these podcasts are usually applicable to all investors, young and old, and particularly those with families. These podcasts move briskly and are not lengthy, yet provide a great deal of practical insights. Nate’s a grea... more

  • Great conversation

I have been listening to Ben and Nate for a long time now. I have know Ben for more than 10 years now as a client. This podcast is great to listen (I listen on the way to work). Turns out most physicians have very similar questions and concerns - and this podcast does a great job to answer those questions and provides a lot of insight for personal finance. Would highly recommend that you follow this podcast !

  • Wise and Genuinely Caring

Physician Family Advisors really understand personal finance for physicians deeply. They are educators that break it down in an understandable way, and are truly passionate about the material. You can tell in all they do that they genuinely care about providing solid financial frameworks for families…something that is so rare in the industry.

I write this as a physician who’s benefited greatly from the team’s knowledge and input. I hope more physicians start listening regularly.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#169 Is Physician Workplace Insurance Enough to Protect Your Family?
Q: If I get a raise, will I actually take home less after taxes?
No. In most cases, you'll take home more money as you earn more, because only the income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate; you can also strategically defer more income to pre-tax accounts to manage your marginal tax exposure.
#167 Are Physicians Itchy About High-Yield Savings Accounts?
Q: Is it prudent to keep a large cash cushion in a high-yield savings account?
Maintain an emergency fund and cash for near-term expenses (cars, home repairs, taxes) but avoid hoarding cash beyond what you need for expected near-term obligations; invest excess cash when appropriate to meet long-term goals.
#167 Are Physicians Itchy About High-Yield Savings Accounts?
Q: Is it wise to buy a $2 million house if we can afford it?
Affordability is about cash flow and comfort, not just price; you should assess whether the ongoing payments fit within your retirement, college, and daily living goals, and consider market risks and liquidity before committing to such a purchase.
#167 Are Physicians Itchy About High-Yield Savings Accounts?
Q: How aggressively should I invest leftover funds in a 529 plan for grandchildren?
Given a long time horizon (20-30+ years), it makes sense to invest more aggressively, often through a stock-heavy allocation, and revisit as circumstances evolve (e.g., as grandchildren are born); avoid over-conservatism when time is on your side.
#167 Are Physicians Itchy About High-Yield Savings Accounts?
Q: What should I do about a 90% stock allocation that makes me uncomfortable?
Discuss the risk at a behavioral level with your advisor, ensure the allocation matches your true risk tolerance, and consider reducing equity exposure if it helps you stay invested through downturns; the key is truly understanding what '90% stocks' means and its impact on your portfolio.
