Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Professional Societies Matter in Biomedical Engineering — A Conversation with Dr. Michael King
Q: Mike, where do we start? You had such a big story career in biomedical engineering, and BMES has clearly been a central part of that journey.
BMES has been my home since I was a postdoc, and the society shaped my career through conferences, leadership roles, and opportunities to connect with students and colleagues, which ultimately helped me publish, mentor, and lead in meaningful ways.
Nerve Regeneration and Academic Leadership — A Conversation with BMES President Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert
Q: How has CRISPR changed your work with stem cells and lineage development?
CRISPR has dramatically sped up the creation and screening of cell lines, moving from lengthy, uncertain differentiation processes to rapid generation of desired progenitors, which accelerates testing and improves the specificity of transplanted cells.
Nerve Regeneration and Academic Leadership — A Conversation with BMES President Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert
Q: What does your nerve regeneration research actually involve, and how do you approach using biomaterials and cells?
The lab focuses on peripheral and spinal cord injuries, using biomaterials for drug delivery and cell transplantation to improve regeneration, built on a foundation of stem cell biology and an integrated view of electrical and molecular cues essential for tissue repair.
What Comes After Graduation? Finding Your Path in Biomedical Engineering — A Conversation with Dr. Jose Rios Lizarraga
Q: How did your graduate training specifically prepare you for industry work, and what gaps did you have to bridge?
Graduate training gave me deep fundamentals in pharmaceutical sciences and polymer engineering, which are essential in industry. The gap was in translating that depth into marketable, role-specific capabilities and tailoring my resume to highlight applicable formulation and manufacturing skills for the jobs I wanted.
What Comes After Graduation? Finding Your Path in Biomedical Engineering — A Conversation with Dr. Jose Rios Lizarraga
Q: What did you think your career would look like after graduation, and how did that compare with reality?
I expected a more straightforward path to industry, with clear steps and quickly landing a six-figure job, but the journey was non-linear. I navigated multiple opportunities, including a postdoc, competitive PhD programs, and strategic industry roles, often weighing job fit and long-term growth over immediate salary.
