Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#25 - Carl Garrett (Table Mesa Restaurant Group)
Q: Why build a business in Northwest Arkansas?
Northwest Arkansas offers a strong combination of anchor employers, a growing ecosystem, and a supportive community that makes it possible to grow diverse concepts. The region provides a mix of stability and opportunity, though costs can be high for developers and tenants, so choosing the right deals matters.
#25 - Carl Garrett (Table Mesa Restaurant Group)
Q: What is the most challenging part of owning a restaurant group today?
The biggest pain point is people—finding folks with a genuine hospitality quotient who are grounded, aligned with values, and committed to serving guests. Training, leadership, and maintaining a servant mindset are essential to sustain growth.
#25 - Carl Garrett (Table Mesa Restaurant Group)
Q: And what would you tell someone who's thinking about opening their first concept?
If you feel burning desire, go for it, but don't overextend financially. Save as much as you can, start small, and consider partnerships if it makes sense. Don't chase big debt or a flashy location just for the sake of growth; build gradually and responsibly.
#17 - Cameron Magee (avad3)
Q: What is your approach to debt and expansion today?
Debt is viewed as a strategic lever to invest in essential assets like a mobile stage and LED walls; they balance debt with cash flow discipline, employee growth, and ROI on assets to ensure long-term resilience.
#17 - Cameron Magee (avad3)
Q: How did you handle the COVID downturn?
They pivoted to virtual events immediately, communicated transparently with staff about furloughs and pay cuts, and later rebuilt through disciplined budgeting, debt management, and a renewed focus on core values and employee development.
