  • So much fun

Ed and Amanda are so much fun to listen to—makes my commute go by much quicker. Their daredevil episodes are my favorites, though I do love listening to them disagree about the recs they give each other in the “normal” episodes.

  • Wonderfully entertaining

Hands down my favourite writing podcast of all time. You won’t find a better combination of entertainment, education and well-timed innuendos anywhere else. My only issue with it is that I had to stop listening to the podcast on my commute to work because I’d get strange looks from people on the train when I’d start snort-wheezing like a chain-smoking pig - the out-takes at the end kill me every time.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Longlist – July 2025 Not Quite Write Prize
Q: What is the difference between a vignette and a story, and how do prompts influence that distinction?
A vignette captures a single moment or mood without a clear beginning-middle-end arc, while a story unfolds with conflict, progression, and character agency. Prompts like crane and burning tend to push writers toward vivid scenes and movement, but many entries remained vignettes; the discussion encouraged expanding a vignette into a fully realized story by adding structure and change.
Longlist – July 2025 Not Quite Write Prize
Q: What was the emotional connection you seek in stories, and how can writers engineer it if they don't share experiences?
We discussed that emotional connection comes from universal human experiences made personal through character, empathy, and show-not-tell technique. Writers should focus on character depth, specific scenes, and relatable actions to invite reader empathy, rather than overloading with generic feelings.
Daredevil Critique – ‘Beachmasters’ by Justin Kramasz
Q: What is the scene goal for the narrator, and how should the stakes be framed for immediate engagement?
The panel suggests making the scene goal explicit (ride the shark) and ensuring the stakes—whether the actions will earn the group credibility or survive the consequences—are clearly tied to that goal from the start.
#21 – [Blank] the Cat
Q: How does Save the Cat apply to Flash Fiction vs. novels?
Save the Cat offers a top-down framework that can help plan a story, but Flash Fiction prioritizes a strong core idea and emotional resonance over ticking every beat, so writers should adapt the structure to fit brevity and impact.
Interview with Frank Bongiorno at Words on the Waves 2024 (#9)
Q: Is there an era that you view as the golden age of Australian politics?
The Whitlam era is significant for its possibilities, but also the efficiency of governments like Menzies and the reform successes of Hawke and Keating.
