Every book has two stories: the one it tells, and the one it hides. The Secret Life of Books is a fascinating, addictive, often shocking, occasionally hilarious weekly podcast starring Sophie Gee, an English professor at Princeton University, and Jonty Claypole, formerly director of arts at the BBC. Every week these virtuoso critics and close friends take an iconic book and reveal the hidden story ... more

Th discussions are always interesting, the hosts are well read and I really love the episodes where they focus more on themes than on a specific book or author. The train episode, for example, is one of my favourites.
Absolutely brilliant show. Just discovered, and am eating up episodes. Hosts are fantastic! So much knowledge, excitement and enthusiasm. More, more, more please!!!
One of my absolute favourite books podcasts, brings alive the classics in a fun and humorous way with that English meets australian knowledge.
Even as someone who struggles getting through some of the classics, this podcast is a delight! It brings books, peoples and places to life, as messages about the past, and hopes for the future. I have loved the musings about readers and how the act of reading brings us together. I have carried many of the thoughts and ideas into my day to day life and pick up on the ripples that certain books, authors and movements have set in motion.. it’s a marvel to tune into this thread. Thank you Jonty and ... more
A podcast I enjoy and look forward to. It has a great range of books discussed and the hosts are knowledgeable & passionate about the novels. They have great chemistry and each episode is good fun.

Two examples of this are one of the hosts arguing Heathcliffe is most likely of Afro-Caribbean heritage funnelling part of the discu... more
