  • Too much WWll

There is far, far more to German history than WW2 but this otherwise excellent podcast returns repeatedly to the war.

you realize how many fine writers the new yorker has had over the years after reading burkhart bilger or masha gessen. one of my close friend’s father wrote for the new yorker. Also a “ German and native New Yorker”. i always says to my friend, “ for christsake” your father wrote for the new yorker”. he always downplays his achievements. i am german, from very low germans, like van gogh’s potato eaters. we were the dirt farmers, muckers, grinders and the rebel rousers at the haymarket. Given that our President is a belligerent Fascist Ethno-Nationalist, it’s a crucial time to learn your Nazi history. This is an amazing resource.

  • should be called N*ZI studies

Over 90% of these episodes are interviews of writers on the War, Nazi Germany and/or the Holocaust—all subjects that are already well covered elsewhere, as they should be. But there is actually more to Germany’s past and present than that.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Árni Heimir Ingólfsson , "Jón Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland" (Indiana UP, 2019)
Q: What are the primary themes in your book? What story and stories does your book tell?
It's sort of a biography, but also a cultural history of Iceland's cultural situation in the 20th century, particularly as it relates to music.
Árni Heimir Ingólfsson , "Jón Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland" (Indiana UP, 2019)
Q: What inspired you to prepare this book? What message do you hope to convey to readers?
I've been fascinated by the story of Jón Leifs, who was basically Iceland's first important classical music composer.
Julia Rensing, "Troubling Archives: History and Memory in Namibian Literature and Art" (Transcript Publishing, 2025)
Q: So what do you think some of the key takeaways might be for those working with archives elsewhere?
We need to expand our practices of knowledge production and move beyond source critique to diversify what counts as reliable sources and acceptable archives.
Julia Rensing, "Troubling Archives: History and Memory in Namibian Literature and Art" (Transcript Publishing, 2025)
Q: Can you explain for any listeners who aren't familiar with that term, what this means and then how you've seen artists practice an ethic of care when they engage with some of this archival material?
An ethic of care implies centering individuals and communities that feel a connection to the material stored in museums or archives. Artists approach photographed subjects as possible ancestors, which changes how we think about ownership and access to archival material.
Michael Jabara Carley, "Stalin's Gamble: The Search for Allies Against Hitler, 1930-1936" (U Toronto Press, 2023)
Q: What went wrong in Soviet foreign policy in the 1930s?
The chief miscalculation was believing that cooperation with Western powers against Nazi Germany was possible, which ultimately failed.
