  • Perhaps let the women speakers speak freely

I enjoyed the conversation about Angela Carter’s work. The frequent cutting off and manoeuvring of the conversation by the hosts, of the women on the panel, especially when talking about gender and feminism, got tired really quickly.

  • Penelope Fitzgerald

Greetings from Decatur, Georgia, in the USA. I just listened to the episode on Penelope Fitzgerald. I have read two of her novels. Your show inspired me to order all 8 of her novels from my local bookshop to read and share with others. Decatur is a town that appreciates its bookstores. 😁

  • Talk this program up!

I just sent 5 friends a link and a heads up about these funny and insightful programs about reading, books and life. So glad to either hear about books previously unknown to me or thoughts that enlarge my understanding.

  • Love !

Engaging, insightful, and humorous. I love the guest speakers you bring on some of your episodes. My only complaint is that your episodes END! The discussions are so engaging that I always feel like you could do multi-episode discussions on a single novel!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Beloved by Toni Morrison - rerun
Q: John, when did you first read this book?
I read Beloved about 20 years ago, exploring how Morrison's language reshapes modernist and slave narratives, and how it shaped my understanding of her as a towering American writer.
Human Voices by Penelope Fitzgerald - rerun
Q: What makes Fitzgerald's dialogue so effective in conveying character?
Her dialogue carries the weight of unspoken tensions, with gaps between lines that the reader must fill, which creates a vivid sense of the social milieu and the inner life of the characters.
Human Voices by Penelope Fitzgerald - rerun
Q: Why did you choose to focus on Human Voices for this episode?
We chose it because it's accessible yet rich with texture and social insight, offering an approachable entry point to Fitzgerald's work while highlighting why she remains fascinating in later life and in world literature discussions.
The Sacred and Profane Love Machine by Iris Murdoch
Q: When did you first read The Sacred and Profane Love Machine or become aware of the writing of Iris Murdoch?
Ian Patterson recalls being aware of Murdoch's name in the 1960s and only began to read her work seriously in his early thirties, starting with The Nice and The Good.
Transit and the Outline Trilogy by Rachel Cusk
Q: Did you find them inclusive or exclusive?
As a woman who is 49 years old and has children who are growing up, I found that it worked for me.
