  • More than just facts!

Really superb. Given the subject, you’d expect a lot of things, and they’re all present: planes, strategies, people, battles. But where this one really excels is in personal connection. I get a much greater sense of connection to those who fought all those years ago from this podcast than I do from others, even though the others may also be excellent. Highly recommended.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep.70 - Q and A Chat Part 2: More Questions Answered!
Q: AD Bond on Facebook asks how aircrew hit wear survives in films and how actual gear would be worn during bailouts.
They note that films often use artistic license; real gear varied, with flight helmets and goggles common during bailouts, and many items would be lost in the slipstream or during chaotic exits, making screen visuals more symbolic than literal.
Ep.70 - Q and A Chat Part 2: More Questions Answered!
Q: Joe Fox on Facebook asks about comparisons between the Norden bomb site and RAF bomb sights, and whether the Norden would have been preferred or shared.
They discuss that the Norden was highly advanced for daylight high-altitude bombing but required clear visibility; the RAF favored the simpler, rugged Mark 14 for night-area bombing, while SABs remained capable but too specialized for widespread use.
Ep.70 - Q and A Chat Part 2: More Questions Answered!
Q: Hi, Darren Little on Facebook asks about mine-laying operations and whether aircraft were specially set up to handle different types of bombs and mines.
The hosts explain that all Bomber Command aircraft were adapted to carry both bombs and mines from early in the war, with various racks and rails allowing for flexible loads across different aircraft.
Episode 46 From the Channel Dash to the Long March: The Navigator's Story, with Stuart Green.
Q: What happened on the mission when your father was shot down?
Stuart detailed his father's harrowing experience of being shot down and subsequently captured, including the challenges he faced as a POW.
Episode 46 From the Channel Dash to the Long March: The Navigator's Story, with Stuart Green.
Q: What was your father's role and how did those events play out during the Channel Dash?
Stuart explained that his father was tasked to bomb enemy ships during the Channel Dash and faced various challenges, including technical failures before successfully taking to the skies.
