  • Great Educators!

I knew very little about WW1 and the events that transpired during 1914-1918. Most of the Podcasts I have listened to were very stale and the speakers weren't the best, but then I found these guys! I appreciated the way they coherently keep to the topic, their manner of speaking, the humor etc... I recommend for anyone who wants to learn about WW1 in a way that doesn't have you "Falling asleep"! Great Podcast

  • The one podcast I never feel is a waste of time

I’m easily irritated by hearing people talk (and talk) - not the best audience for a conversation-based podcast. These gents are somehow an exception- it’s not only that I find the material interesting but the hosts keep the discussion on point and professional and have interesting quotes and sources. Some of the points are repeated but that’s relatively bearable.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 129: What Was It Really Like to Survive Gallipoli?
Q: Tell us a little about what soldiers ate in Gallipoli and how that fed into dehydration issues.
The diet was monotonous and heavily salted bully beef with hard biscuits, lacking fresh fruit and vegetables, which, in the heat, increased dehydration and thirst. Meals were improvised with limited cooking facilities, and while jam and sugar were available, the overall nutrition was insufficient in vitamins, contributing to weakness and illness. Soldiers often soaked biscuits to make them palatable, but overall food quality and variety worsened dehydration and digestive problems, especially in extreme heat.
Episode 125: Gallipoli 1915: What Really Happened at Anzac Cove?
Q: What were the main reasons the initial assault did not go as planned, and what allowed some forces to initially push inland?
The discussion highlights misjudged maps, the rugged Maidos Plain, and the hidden topography as major obstacles, while small-scale advances by some units were possible due to surprise, favorable beaches, and aggressive tempo before Ottoman reserves could counteract.
Episode 125: Gallipoli 1915: What Really Happened at Anzac Cove?
Q: Can you tell us a bit about the background of the guest and why this topic is important to understanding Gallipoli?
Steve Chambers explains that the Anzac landings were part of a broader attempt to break through at the Dardanelles, driven by strategic aims and Allied leadership, but the operation's success depended on terrain, timing, and rapid decision-making, all of which were compromised on the day.
Episode 120: From the Home Front to the Alps
Q: So the question is, how were veterans treated after the Great War?
It varied by nation but generally veterans were respected in countries like Britain, France, and Italy, with some welfare measures beginning to appear, such as pensions for disabled veterans, while Germany faced greater social and economic tension and a more volatile veteran scene.
Episode 100: WWI’s forgotten Battles, Tank Fails & What We Got Wrong! – Our 100th Episode Special
Q: Did British tank crews perform well in the early versions of the tank?
Yes, there was inadequate testing before the tanks were deployed, leading to issues in their effectiveness during the war.
