I’m easily irritated by hearing people talk (and talk) - not the best audience for a conversation-based podcast. These gents are somehow an exception- it’s not only that I find the material interesting but the hosts keep the discussion on point and professional and have interesting quotes and sources. Some of the points are repeated but that’s relatively bearable.
Well researched, organized and polished from episode 1. Some new podcasts take their time to find their footing or, oddly, have poor audio quality in the first episodes until they sort out the kinks. Not these guys — professional and prepared from episode 1. You can find such a variety here, from quests down obscure rabbit holes to broad overviews of major battles and campaigns. Thank you, Dan and Spencer, for your hard work and bringing these topics to new audiences.
Guys, thanks for the great pods with Matthias! So many layers to the back and forth adaptation by each side and the changing strategic situation for each side. Fascinating!
Entertaining and professional war history by skilled communicators one of whom is German.
I’m a keen WW1 enthusiast and I love this podcast, whether you’re new to the subject or know a bit to begin with it covers everything. The hosts are easy to listen to and have a wealth of knowledge. Been listening for a very long time now, apologies it’s took this long to write a review!

This show digs into the First World War with a focus on underexplored stories, myths, and strategic realities. Across episodes, listeners get nuanced takes on Western Front campaigns, battlefield technology, logistics, and the cultural memory surrounding key battles. The hosts—an historian and a war-studies expert—balance deep archival analysis with accessible storytelling, often linking past events to broader implications for memory, national narratives, and military history. A notable strength is the way episodes pair technical detail (tactics, logistics, weapons) with human-centered narratives, making it appealing to committed history buffs and educated general listeners alike.
