  • Seems to have lost focus

From the start this podcast offered a less-UK/US focus on the war with good presenters who are clearly knowledgeable and experienced. Of late the episodes have got longer and the aim less clear. It started out doing myth busting (which is a bit of a cul de sac) so good to diversify but now it is just a chunk of episodes on a campaign that don’t feel fully planned or answer a specific angle or question. It’s fine. But just fine.

  • History As It Really Happened

WW2: Both Sides of the Wire” is hands down one of the best history podcasts I’ve come across. It’s clear the hosts put in serious research, but what makes it stand out is how they manage to strip everything back to the facts—no bias, no clichés, no preaching. Just the raw truth of what actually happened.

The way they explain battles, tactics, and the mechanics of war is impressive. You can almost see the battlefield unfolding in front of you, especially when they dive into the Eastern Front. Th... more

  • Too Basic - Myths are for Amateurs

This is a decent podcast, but the theme of being some kind of “myth busting” podcast means they cover amateur hour topics with myths that uneducated people believe. That very premise limits the type of content they’ll provide. It’s very nearly for beginner history aficionados. For example the series on Leningrad, they said “we hope this puts the siege on your map” as if we’re so new to WWII that we’ve never heard of the siege before. “There is a river called XYZ” etc. please trust your listene... more

  • WW2 History review

I found Battle Guide via YouTube and decided after listening to a lot of JRE, I needed a break and broaden my knowledge and understanding of the European theatre of WW2. Great to get opinions and knowledge from both sides of the conflict. The boys are passionate and it shows in the quality of their product. Look forward to many more episodes. 5 stars!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 53: Listeners’ Q&As – From Jet Fighters to Rommel’s Missed Opportunity
Q: Why do German military leaders seem to bear more visible scars compared to their Allied counterparts?
German generals often engaged more closely in combat due to their leadership culture, which favored front-line presence, and some historically had rites of passage involving facial scars associated with student fraternity traditions, leading to a perception of higher prominence of scars in imagery related to German military figures.
Episode 53: Listeners’ Q&As – From Jet Fighters to Rommel’s Missed Opportunity
Q: Could the D-Day landings have been stopped?
No, given the German resources and response plan, despite discussions about whether they might have adjusted defensive strategies on the beaches, the consensus is that even with an immediate armored response, they likely couldn't have prevented the landings' success.
Episode 53: Listeners’ Q&As – From Jet Fighters to Rommel’s Missed Opportunity
Q: How did Germany's defeat in WW2 shape the stab in the back myth regarding the First World War?
Germany's more total defeat in WW2 discredited the stab in the back myth since it now lacked popular support and moved to fringe political discussion. The war experience shifted how historians and the public reflected on Germany's past involvement in WW1 as being more evidentially at fault.
Episode 46: Listeners’ Q&As - From Hitler To The Merchant Navy
Q: What is the significance of the Merchant Navy in WWII?
The Merchant Navy was critical to the Allied war effort, providing the logistics needed for global warfare. Casualty rates for these sailors were significantly high, indicating the dangers they faced during naval operations.
Episode 46: Listeners’ Q&As - From Hitler To The Merchant Navy
Q: How did Hitler go from Austrian to German?
Hitler began as an Austrian citizen and only transitioned to a German identity after dodging service in the Austro-Hungarian army, joining the German army instead, and later exploiting bureaucratic loopholes to obtain German citizenship.
