  • Great Pod

I like this pod a lot. The format is simple; usually there’s a new book and the author is, basically, pushing it. But they are mostly interesting and sometimes I get the book and read it. Or look for it at the library. I really liked the episode about Budapest last year. That one turned out to be a really good read. There will be always be more books about the war being written so Angus will always have guests for his show.

  • Leyte Gulf Episode

I felt that the Battle of Leyte Gulf episode was rather weak. despite the guest podcast, having recently written a book on Leyte Gulf, the story of this epic We2 naval engagement was told is a somewhat disjointed fashion and did not capture important aspects of the battle.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

308 - Mers El-Kébir: The British Attack on the French Navy
Q: What were the broader implications for Allied relations, especially with the United States?
The attack reinforced British determination in the eyes of the Americans, contributing to a shift in American policy and faster material support, while also fueling German propaganda about British brutality and complicating Allied diplomacy in the early war years.
308 - Mers El-Kébir: The British Attack on the French Navy
Q: How did the negotiations unfold between the British and the French at Mers El-Kébir?
Negotiations were intense and protracted, with British representatives offering options and French commander Gensoul seeking to delay and to retain some autonomy, while the British pressed for immediate neutralization or surrender to prevent German access, culminating in a forced attack as darkness approached.
308 - Mers El-Kébir: The British Attack on the French Navy
Q: What were the primary strategic motivations behind taking the fleet at Mers El-Kébir?
The host explains that Britain feared the French fleet would fall under German control and sought to deny Germany control of crucial naval power, even at the cost of French casualties, prioritizing long-term Allied naval reach and shipping security over immediate French interests.
305 - A Boy Soldier in Hitler's Army
Q: What was his childhood like growing up in Witten in the 1930s, before the war? Indeed, where is Witten?
Willi grew up in Witten, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia near Dortmund, where propaganda and Nazi indoctrination began early; schoolbooks and community life increasingly centered on loyalty to the Fuhrer and “blood and soil.”
304 - Eisenhower and Churchill
Q: How comfortable was Churchill with Ike as the commander for Overlord, and would he have preferred Alan Brooke?
Churchill accepted an American-led Overlord due to geopolitical realities and the practical need to coordinate with the United States, although he privately lamented not choosing Alan Brooke; the guest explains Churchill's broader political calculus and his willingness to adapt.

A deep, scholarship-forward history show that centers on World War II across many theaters, focusing on battles, strategic decision-making, leadership dynamics, and personal narratives from the era.
