  • This is a great podcast on World War II! I recommend becoming a member so you can access the 300 members-only episodes. For example, a recent series was about George Binney, a British CPA who became leader of operation running German blockade of Sweden multiple times in gun boats to bringing back to Britain ball bearings essential for airplane engines for Battle of Britain. I've listened to several World War II history podcasts and never heard this story before.

Informative-But-Ep. 617 Hedy Lamarr invented spread spectrum secure communication to guide torpedoes in WWII, presented to Navy, who ignored the technology. But later this was used in the Army Air Force test of drone bomber. When we lost Jack Kennedy in remote controlled bomb experiment. And the project was scrapped.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 630-Steve Vesce Interview: Harry Hopkins: One Ordinary Man
Q: But how did you decide to move from a potential movie project to a TV series, and what drew you to Hopkins's story?
I was captivated by Hopkins's life and missions, and realized his story could unfold more fully over a TV series, which would do justice to the depth and breadth of his influence across multiple fronts in WWII.
Episode 605-Bruce Henderson Book Interview-Midnight Flyboys
Q: What were the challenges faced by pilots flying these missions at low altitudes?
Bruce highlights the risks of flying below 600 feet and the necessity for exceptional navigational skills, emphasizing that pilots had to navigate in the dark and drop supplies accurately without prior visual cues.
Episode 605-Bruce Henderson Book Interview-Midnight Flyboys
Q: How successful was the operation in aiding the French resistance?
Bruce states that the operation was very successful, as about 10 million pounds of supplies were dropped, and Eisenhower noted that the French resistance's efforts were essential in shortening the war by six months.
Episode 605-Bruce Henderson Book Interview-Midnight Flyboys
Q: Can you give us a little bit of background about Operation Carpetbagger and its significance?
Bruce explains that Operation Carpetbagger was initiated in late 1943 to strengthen the French resistance before the Allied invasion. It involved U.S. Army Air Force squadrons, specifically B-24s, which were tasked with dropping supplies and agents into France.
Episode 591-Jack El-Hai Interview: The Nazi and the Psychiatrist
Q: So how do you think the book resonates more today in today's political climate than maybe back in 2013?
El-Hai explains that the extremism observed at Kelley's time was on the fringes but now is more central in the political environment, making the book's warnings much more relevant today.
