Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Where the Girls Were Brings a Mother's Haunting Story to Light
Q: What made you choose a modern Gothic setting for the maternity home and its surroundings, and how did that shape the narrative?
The setting was chosen to create a claustrophobic atmosphere that contrasts with the outside world of 1968 San Francisco, reinforcing themes of secrecy and control surrounding women's bodies.
Where the Girls Were Brings a Mother's Haunting Story to Light
Q: Did you know about the rabbit test before you started researching the book, or did you learn about it during your research?
I had heard the idea of the rabbit test but learned the details and the grim truth behind it during research, which then became a central symbolic motif in the novel.
March Book Club: The Mad Wife (Reader's Choice Selection)
Q: What surprised you most about the reception and the publishing process?
The timing differences between bestseller lists, surprise at making multiple lists in a single week, and the unexpected breadth of reader engagement across channels were all surprising and exciting.
March Book Club: The Mad Wife (Reader's Choice Selection)
Q: How did the bestseller momentum affect your writing and career planning?
It gave me freedom and time to breathe, allowing me to avoid rushing into the next contract and to reassess the next project's direction while staying attentive to readers' responses.
March Book Club: The Mad Wife (Reader's Choice Selection)
Q: What was it like seeing The Mad Wife become a bestseller and visible in bookstores?
It felt surreal and incredibly validating, especially after quieter releases; it was a joy to witness the book take on a life of its own through bookstore displays, signings, and reader momentum.
