In December of 2002, NBC News producer Dan Slepian got a letter from a New York state prison. It was from a man serving 25 years to life for murder. And it ended with a desperate plea: look into my case. Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez had been convicted of killing a retired New York City police officer, but he insisted he didn’t do it. Dan was skeptical. Prosecutors said five eyewitnesses had sworn JJ ... more

Words are insufficient to express my admiration for the participants in this harrowing story. Raw-flesh reporting of the appalling events occurring to one remarkable human being whose indomitable mind and spirit lead to great triumph against all odds. In his agonizing journey, a set of no-less-outstanding individuals remain faithful sharing profound suffering, and sparing no effort to reach the most yearned and deserved of freedoms. Praise to Slepian’s commitment to serious journalism and his pu... more
A story that highlights all that is wrong with the justice system and compels change. A+ story telling
Dan is just a fabulous story teller. When will we as voters demand that the justice system be fixed?
Excellent story!! This was by far the most gripping story I’ve heard in years. I felt every high and low along with “JJ”. He’s a man of unfailing integrity, character, and courage to face all those years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. It was amazing.
It started because of Dans voice, the general synopsis and bedtime listens. It held onto me from there. The years, the journey, the friendship, the triumph, the empathy, the humans. It’s humans on this earth like Dan that bring me joy, remind me how much we can learn from others and simply leave me revelling in the human journey of the good ones.
