  • Always a great listen!

I usually don’t go beyond tapping the 5 star thingy for podcasts I like but this one is special. Amanda does such a great job interviewing guests and always has really great questions and insights and I pretty much always learn something valuable. She and Chris are just naturally good at this podcasting thing and they offer different but complimentary perspectives. For someone to have gone through what she has endured with such resilience is incredibly inspiring.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Fear Makes Bad Policy (Laura Porter)
Q: How can violence prevention be integrated with broader criminal justice reform?
By investing in evidence-based, community-wide strategies that address trauma, provide support, and engage schools, hospitals, police, and community groups in a coordinated effort, which has shown long-term reductions in violence in places like Newark.
Why Fear Makes Bad Policy (Laura Porter)
Q: What actually helps victims move toward healing after violence, if not the death penalty?
Healing comes from a combination of restorative processes, access to resources, transparency about the legal process, and community support; restoration and accountability can occur without capital punishment, which often fails to provide true closure.
Why Fear Makes Bad Policy (Laura Porter)
Q: What led you to question the death penalty and advocate for its abolition?
My experiences growing up after the Holocaust, working as a public defender, and witnessing flaws and errors in the justice system shaped my belief that the state should not have the power to kill, especially given fallibility and bias in human institutions.
The Myth of Confrontation
Q: But in most cases, the abuser is not even acknowledging any harm mostly due to his denial and constructed reality. So what do you have to say to the majority of people in a similar position who either are rightfully rejecting the idea of contacting such a person, or who have contacted and train wreck?
The core message is to focus on your own healing and boundaries rather than forcing the other person to acknowledge harm. Accountability can be pursued by holding oneself to a path of understanding and boundary-setting, not by demanding an apology from the abuser. Healing may involve learning to see the other person with complexity while protecting yourself from further harm.
How Paying for Intimacy Changes Everything (Andrea Werhun)
Q: What makes sex work different from other intimate industries besides the obvious legal status?
The guest argues that the key difference is the criminalization itself, which excludes health and safety protections, inhibits organization, and sustains stigma; when labor rights are recognized, sex work becomes more like other service industries with negotiated boundaries and safety practices.
