Think you might be in a cult? Want to know the signs? Join Sarah Edmondson and Anthony “Nippy” Ames to talk about things that are..a little bit culty. Or in their case: a whole bunch of culty. As whistleblowers documented in the critically-acclaimed HBO series “The Vow,” Sarah and Nippy have a lot to say about their experience, and burning questions to ask people with similar stories. They’re here... more

For many years this was one of my favourite podcasts, however recently in two episodes, comments were made by the hosts that came across to me as dangerously racist and uninformed. I feel too afraid to even reach out to the hosts to talk about these things because I don’t trust my experience will be heard and I’m not prepared to have to explain myself. I have continued listening even after these episodes but decided to change my review here to reflect how those comments have impacted my view of ... more
This podcast is one of the best! It’s personally helped me recognize and better cope with an abusive childhood and how/why I remained loyal to my abusers for so many years and kept falling for their obvious lies. It seems like most cult leaders are very much like abusive parents, only on a much larger scale.
What makes this podcast different is the insight and honesty that the hosts share about their daily struggles in re-entering a cult free life.
Their banter is delightful and funny. I would l... more
I’ve listened to this show for many years, and I’ve really enjoyed its breadth and evolution. Nippy and Sarah bring a nice balance and variety through their “same church different pew” perspectives, to borrow an expression from my gramma. I’ve had some culty experiences in my life and this show has helped me parse out my questions and doubts. Plus, these two have zero interest in blowing smoke or posturing. Very, very refreshing. Thanks Sarah and Nip!
I’ve been listening regularly for the past year, and I just want to tell you guys that you’ve made a huge difference in my life. Your show and the wealth of knowledge and insight I’ve gained through listening to your awesome interviews has been sooo amazing! I’ve reflected on past relationships, groups and influencers in my own life that displayed culty dynamics. I’m just so grateful to you Sarah and Nippy! I got your book today and look forward to reading and sharing it! Keep up the great podca... more
They couldn’t tell when they joined a cult, but we’re supposed to take their advice on other “cult” type things? Uh, that’s alright.

A deep, survivor-centered coverage of coercive control, high-control groups, and the ethics of exposing abuse. Episodes regularly explore NXIVM, ISTA, Jehovah's Witnesses, and other cult-like ecosystems, with guests ranging from survivors to investigative journalists and subject-matter experts. The hosts balance personal experience with rigorous questions about manipulation, consent, healing, and accountability, often tying media influence and public perception to justice and reform. Noteworthy is the show's commitment to practical guidance for recognizing red flags, navigating healing, and holding powerful groups to account, all while maintaining a candid, occasionally candidly humorous tone that helps stories land without sensationalism.
