  • Love the show, please fewer filler words!

I really enjoy hearing from Monica, and her guests are full of interesting insights with loads to say. Because Monica is not a broadcaster or a trained actor, her use of the filler words ‘like’ and ‘you know’ while making the show sound conversational, they really do detract from her hosting. I’d love to see all the same wonderful features, with a bit more pause, and fewer annoying filler words! I hope this is helpful feedback!

  • So so

I thought I’d start listening to this as I enjoyed the piece Monica wrote for Vanity Fair. Some episodes are great, but I have had to stop listening due to her clear hatred of animals just because a cat scratched her once. Several guests have brought up the topic of how much a pet or an animal means to them, and she has stopped them in their tracks by declaring she hates animals. The guest then did not expand on what they were going to say. Monica often comes across as rude, and more interested... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Deeyah Khan
Q: What motivates you to sit with people you fundamentally oppose, and how do you manage personal risk?
A commitment to activism through storytelling and a belief that understanding someone's life story can reveal the vulnerabilities and pressures that push people toward violence. It requires courage, discipline to set aside baggage, and a focus on the possibility of human connection even when views diverge vastly.
Deeyah Khan
Q: Can you talk about your experience going to Charlottesville and what you see in America today?
The conversation highlighted the pervasiveness of fear and the importance of seeking common humanity. It underscored that while people may never agree, listening and recognizing shared human needs—belonging, safety, dignity—are essential ingredients for any meaningful dialogue and progress.
Krista Vernoff
Q: What role did health revelations play in your life and writing?
Health revelations, especially the hair dye poisoning, became a catalyst for change and for writing about generational trauma, accountability, and the myth of the 'good person.' These experiences informed her approach to reclaiming narrative and choosing wholeness.
Krista Vernoff
Q: What did burnout look like for you, and how did you begin to address it?
Burnout manifested as chronic illness, weight gain, and an exhausted nervous system. The turning point involved recognizing the need to slow down, shift work, and pursue practices like nervous system regulation and rest, including therapy and medication when appropriate, to regain balance.
Madelaine Petsch
Q: Do you feel like that's something that's sort of threaded throughout your life?
Madelaine reflects that her upbringing, which fostered autonomy and choice, has led her to seek independence in her career, though she acknowledges it also makes her indecisive in personal decisions.
