  • Incredibly comforting to hear others’ stories

We are new to Home Education and this podcast reconfirms my decision to deregister my child, every episode I listen to. It is so inspiring to hear other people’s stories and to feel like there is a community of support available as and when we may need that support. I don’t know what the future will look like but I am beginning to worry less and less about that now, safe in the knowledge that I am doing the best I can for my children. Thank you HEFA. I look forward to more episodes!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Home Ed 101 - Exams
Q: What's the difference between GCSEs and functional skills, and when might functional skills be the right route?
Functional skills are designed as adult-focused qualifications that focus on core maths and English skills; they are not equivalent to GCSEs, which cover broader content. Colleges may accept either depending on the course, but it's important to check entry criteria as they vary by institution.
Home Ed 101 - Exams
Q: Katie, can you talk a bit about how you navigated GCSEs with your kids and what options you explored?
Katie explains that GCSEs aren't mandatory for home educators, shares how her eldest pursued a mix of GCSEs and alternative routes like college-based programmes, and emphasizes assessing each child's interests and needs while using resources like exam boards and examiner reports to demystify the process.
